Pickleball Video: Oh, Oh…Move Back!

When I am playing at one of the Community Centers and I watch the games, I notice that most of the time, when a player is at the NVZ (net), they tend to stay there in almost every situation.

There is one school of thought that actually recommends this strategy, but there are times when it might be better to back up to give yourself more time to return a ball coming at you quickly.

Mark Renneson of Third Shot Sports has video to explain why…

Pickleball Strategy: 3/4 Court Defence

If you can’t get enough of pickleball and you like to listen to podcasts (web broadcast like radio), Mark also has a Pickleball Problem show. You can download them into an app or listen to them directly from the web page

There are some very good hints and you get to hear what pickleball problems others are having.

Vide-Ohs: Scotch – Not Straight Up

Over the weekend we dined with some friends at a popular local restaurant. One of the people in our party ordered a glass of scotch, neat.

When the drink arrived and was placed on the table, it appeared to be tipping over and all of the diners quickly reached for the glass to prevent a spill. I guess the joke was on us because the glass was designed to wobble in place when set on a flat surface. Upon inspection, we could see a bubble on the bottom-center of the glass.

It was quite interesting. Here is a brief video:

When the wait staff returned, we remarked about the glass and they said that they don’t have spills although it does cause some interesting experiences.

Pickleball Video: Volley those Dink Shots

Jordan Briones, host of PrimeTime Pickleball, offers a video to explain why it is important to learn to volley some dink shots. When first learning this technique, it may be hard to determine which shots should be volleyed and which should be bounced, but Jordan addresses that in the video.

Also…pay attention to the technique he describes re: paddle position and grip.

Lifehack – A Secure Band-Aid Finger Tip

Did you ever visit a friend’s house and find that they use something in a unique or creative way? Or perhaps you see something demonstrated online showing how something considered trash can be turned into a useful tool. I think everyone likes to learn about Lifehacks and how to use things creatively.

I haven’t shared one in quite a while so I hope you find this technique interesting if not useful.

The lifehack below is a Youtube video explaining how to secure a bandaid to a finger tip to prevent it from coming loose very easily. I think many of us have had this problem and will find this an interesting solution.

Vide-Ohs: HS Dance Magic via the Wizard of OZ

To think that this performance was executed by high school students is astounding! This would be impressive if it were performed professionally on Broadway or at a Las Vegas venue. Everyone involved with this production should be saluted.

The choreography, dancing, scenery, etc. is wonderful and very well done. You will soon forget this was a hs gymnasium and I can guarantee that if you enjoy dancing and music, you will savor this masterpiece.

The WOW factor in Landscape Photography

When it comes to photography, I am a generalist. I like capturing photographs of a variety of subjects such as insects, interesting buildings, unusual signs and landscapes. There are others as well, but I must say that my favorite is landscapes.

What makes landscape photography most challenging, at least for me, is that we can be in a “wow” place and it is hard to capture the essence of what it is that we are seeing that forces us to say “wow!” The human eye can see much more than a camera and we tend to take in the colors, lighting, broad composition and put it all together in the mind’s eye to achieve that Oh-My-God feeling.

One of the photographers I follow, Erik Wahlstrom, has created an insightful video (below) which may cause us to rethink what is included in the landscape genre. He also uses one of my favorite Ansel Adams quotes about landscape photography. I have certainly felt the sting of disappointment amidst my landscape photography efforts.

“Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer – and often the supreme disappointment.” – Ansel Adams

Train Vide-Oh: Drone On – Flight of the Year?

I must say up front that I know nothing about flying a drone or taking pictures or movies with one. All I can say is that many of the blogs I follow have examples of drone usage and some of them are absolutely stunning.

I don’t want to address any of the legal issues of this phenomenon, but I do want to share a video with you that shows some of the skills users have developed in flying these amazing technological wonders.

I don’t know what all these words mean – Gapping, Perching or Powerlooping, but I am sure if you watch this video you will see examples of them. If the video is a bit long for you, you can get a good flavor of it and see most of the moves if you start at the 2:15 mark.

Whether you approve of drones, like, dislike, etc., you will probably have to admit that it takes much skill to do all of this with a flying machine.

Video: Gorillas Have Friendly Human Interaction

Primates are fascinating in part because they remind us of us. This video produced by the Aspinall Foundation shows how intelligent, loving, etc. gorillas can be. Pay special attention to the scene with the hat. Notice how the gorilla inferred the use of the hat and demonstrated that he knew its purpose.

This is part of information from the YouTube video page:

“In June 2017 our Chairman, Damian Aspinall and his wife, Victoria, made a special trip to our project in Gabon to oversee the transfer of a young gorilla group from the sanctuary where they met, to our Gorilla Protection Project in the Batéké Plateau National Park.

During their trip, Damian and Victoria met up with Djalta and Ima; two male gorillas from Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, who made the journey back to the wild in 2003.”
