Laughter & Inspiration 20200423

Dear JBRish readers. During this time of increased anxiety #worry and isolation #I think it is a bit of a relief to sit back and try to find something to laugh about. This is not an attempt to provide humor in bad taste.

As you can see #there are others around the world who are trying to lighten the global burden by offering a smile or two albeit a small smile; perhaps just a grin.

ATTRIBUTION – If there is an item posted on JBRish for which there is no attribution and someone can provide accurate #verifiable identification of the originator #kindly leave it in a comment and I will provide appropriate annotation.

Video: Over the River and Through the Woods

We never know what happens under the cover of secrecy and darkness. A stream in Pennsylvania was bridged by a fallen tree and animals used it as a super highway to carry on their tasks of daily life.

It is interesting for us because someone had the foresight to record a year in the life of this bridge.

NOTE – For those who are interested, as seen above, the temperature, date and time appear on the bottom of the frame for each “episode.”

From the YouTube Page:

The video, taken year-round, shows bears, deer, bobcats, grouse, beavers and many other wildlife crossing the bridge, or swimming underneath in their natural habitats. Credit: Robert Bush.

Animal Photography – Faux Foes: An Unlikely Pair

Nature has its way and every now and then it reminds us that the rules of the Universe often bend.

This is a short story “captured” by Finnish photographer, Lassi Rautiainen, who witnessed a friendship between an unlikely pair of nature’s predators. A female wolf and a male brown bear became friends and hunting buddies.

Photography: My Shot — Wild Burros at Lake Pleasant – Morristown, AZ

We decided to take a hike at Lake Pleasant to see if we could locate the wild burros that reportedly live there. As we travel along the highways, we see signs to watch out for the burros, but we have never seen one.

The park has a Wild Burro Trail so naturally we decided this would be our target destination. Lucky for us we were less than ten minutes into the hike when we spotted a lone burro. Upon further exploration, we came across the tres amigos (three friends) pictured here.

So…there really are wild burros at Lake Pleasant!

Photography Video: Tag Responsibly or Don’t Tag

To Tag or Not to Tag. That may be the Question.

Photo Via Petapixel

If you follow my posts on this blog, you probably noticed that I do a fair amount of hiking. We generally visit two national parks or national park-like areas each year. At each location we spend between one or two weeks.

Prior to our trip, we plan the trails and vistas we would like to see. There are often sights that are iconic and of course we like to visit them and take some photographs for our collection. Often, however, we are way off the beaten path when we see some stunning and perhaps more pristine areas.

I have often discussed the idea of keeping these areas as natural as possible with as little human impact as feasible. After all, this is the home of the native flora and fauna.

The negative aspects of tagging photographs with exact geographic locations has been debated for a number of years. The video below – created by Jackson Hole, Wyoming – highlights the seriousness of this problem.

Personally, I don’t use specific tags with my photographs. I may include a general location such as the name of the National Park, City or State, but that is all.

What are your thoughts.

Video-Ohs: Lion, Tiger and Bear – Really!

This is a sad, but heartwarming story of three animals that were found in the basement of a drug dealer when the house was raided. The very young animals (lion, tiger and bear) were mistreated and injured. They apparently bonded when they were kept in the basement during this time as they were they only other living creatures to show warmth and kindness.

Once freed, they were brought to a sanctuary where they continue to live as BFFs. The video is interesting and remarkable as these three predators have found a way to get along and survive.

Notes from the YouTube page:

Once kept as illegal pets, bear Baloo, tiger Shere Khan, and lion Leo share a brotherly bond despite how unbelievable it might seem. The trio cuddles and plays in their new home in Atlanta, Georgia.

Birds: “Curiouser and Curiouser”

“Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).” ― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

Green-tailed Towhee

I think humans like to look at other living creatures and assign to them characteristics of our own species. We anthropomorphize other living things. We immediately understand that animals feel fear and love of some kind. I am not sure if all non-human animals share a sense of curiosity, but some obviously do. Dolphins, whales, primates, etc have all demonstrated behavior we would tend to classify as curiosity.

I have found that some birds are curious as well.

In the picture above, there is a bird sitting far away from where we were standing. Because of my interest in birds, we stopped to watch it for a while. You can’t make out the bird in the yellow circle in the photo above, but there was a very pretty bird sitting on that rock. A bird I had never seen before.

It took me a while to get out my superzoom camera and take a closeup of that particular bird, but here it is.

Green-tailed Towhee

As we rested a good number of yards away, sitting on a rock, the bird continued to flit around, but at one point it landed on a tree stump that was only about twenty feet away; relatively close for a wild creature. I had the distinct impression that this bird was curious about us and what we were or weren’t doing. Since we were sitting quietly watching the bird, taking a drink and resting, I think the bird realized we had no bad intentions and it took chances to come close to us. It didn’t “park” there or stay very long in any one spot, but it did fly away and then come close again.

Eventually we packed up and moved on. Later I was able to identify this bird as a Green-tailed Towhee. This is one of the prettier birds I have seen with it’s red-orange tuft atop.

NOTE – Green-tailed Towhee. Park Ridge Fire Lookout Station Trail, Kings Canyon, CA

Video – Holiday Season Messages – Poignant, Witty, Funny

I found this video to be entertaining and engaging which is quite something for an advertisement. I am sure that some may deem it a bit hokey, but if viewed in light of the season, I think you will find it cute, humorous or poignant depending upon your mood at the time or your general disposition.

I watched it and thought of a couple of subtexts:

  • “Can’t we all just get along?!” – Rodney King
  • “Some of the best things in life are simple.”
  • “You never know what effect you will have on someone or something.”
  • “Live and learn.”

And I am sure this list goes on. If you can think of a witty, poignant or thought-provoking subtext, why not add it in the comment section?
