Kitten Kaboodle

My wife and I have had a couple of cats as pets and I must admit that dogs ARE more lovable and warm and fuzzy, but there is still something quite attractive and mysterious about cats.

Our last cat was Kitty Carlisle (KC) named after a popular TV and game show personality of the 1950’s – 60’s. I guess I am showing my age a bit here. At first when we mentioned the name of the cat some people who were a bit older would smile knowingly. Now we rarely get any recognition whatsoever so it is just a cute cat name.

Here is a picture of Carlisle enjoying her favorite pastime and perhaps a favorite of every cat!

Kitty Carlise, our cat, napping

KC didn’t always sleep. Sometimes she just rested. Here she is in an open fall window enjoying the last warm breezes of autumn. Yes, that is a towel under her. You wouldn’t want her to lay down on a hard, uneven window sill would you?

Kitty Carlisle resting in an open window.

If you happened to walk in on her and disturb her routine such as when cleaning herself while sitting in the papasan chair, she would stare you down.

One of her very favorite times was when my wife would bring a towel straight from the clothes dryer to assure that she had a warm cozy place to…what else…Nap!

We also enjoy cartoons, drawings, poems and other creative works featuring cats and lucky for me, I live with a quilter. If you are not familiar with Laurel Burch, she has some fantastic, multi-colored and often nearly psychedelic designs. As luck would have it, I think she liked cats too.

Here is one of her squares of a cat family with a very loving kitten.

Although Kitty Carlisle is no longer with us, her spirit remains strong within us and we still have a feline affinity, as you can probably tell.

Poignant Photo of a Faithful Dog’s Last Ride

Pets are very loving and give us something that is hard to find; unconditional love. Doges especially would willingly give their lives to save their masters. That is what makes it so heartbreaking when it is time to say goodbye.

This picture of a dog’s last ride opens our emotions as we see how much it is enjoyed even with the wear-and-tear of old age.

Kayaking Going to the Dogs

Man’s best friend may also be a good kayaking companion. At least that is what David Bahnson thought when he outfitted his kayak to accommodate his golden retrievers.

As Bahnson reported to the Huffington Post, UK:

“Our dogs have always loved to travel with us in cars, in my airplane, in boats. Building a way for them to kayak with us just seemed like a logical choice, and the boats are fun to build anyway.”

Carefree, AZ – Enchanted Pumpkin Garden , 2015 – III

The Carefree Desert Gardensis hosting a pumpkin fest this year and there is a schedule of events for family fun. Some of the days provide opportunities to watch sculptors at work creating their special brand of Jack-O-Lanterns. You can find more information by clicking here.

This is part three of a three part series about the Carefree Desert Gardens Pumpkin Festival. You can read the other posts here:

Part I, Part II

One of the more interesting venues at the Carefree Desert Gardens Pumpkin Festival is the ability to watch expert pumpkin sculptors at work. There is ample seating and shade for a good number of spectators so find your holiday inspiration here.

A few of the carved pumpkins were quite whimsical and interesting. The appendages, it is noted, are not made of natural materials because they would be difficult to maintain and fashion according to need.

A very clever displays is the one with the pumpkins diving off of a high stone wall into a bucket of water. Ooops! Apparently one pumpkin missed.

Of course this is not to take away from the more artistic, if not serious, offerings.

The planners put a lot of thought into this production as evidenced by the pumpkin picnic scene which is partially shown in the pictures below.

Once again, I should mention the ever present gardens which are beautiful in their own right and what desert planting cannot be improved with some nested pumpkins?

It is not easy being a pumpkin at this time of the year so after putting on such an interesting show, I think you will agree that these pumpkins have earned a good rest!

Happy Halloween and safe Trick or Treating!

Carefree, AZ – Enchanted Pumpkin Garden , 2015 – II

Our previous post (see it here) about the Carefree Desert Gardens Pumpkin Festival provided a good overview of what you might find at the exhibit. In our second post we will follow up with more posed pumpkin scenes…*

Such as this Motorcycle pumpkin daredevil with feet flying behind as he ramps over his “volunteers.” Is that pumpkin all the way to the left praying?

Pushing your special pumpkin friend on a swing is always a fun activity.

Or perhaps you would rather go for a wheelbarrow ride, but I don’t suggest being too pumpkin bossy!

For that very special pumpkin in your life, roasting marshmallows together is a very Halloween thing to do,

But try to ignore the eerie looking toadstools growing at the left end of the log!

Scootering is one way to travel around the festival to visit your pumpkin buddies.

Golf appears to be a very difficult sport for pumpkins.

Halloween mischief may be at hand with at least one pumpkin spotted with a slingshot.

Carving pumpkins can create a mess and someone needs to help clean up.

And after the cleanup, there is time for a siesta!

Of course don’t forget there are gardens to look at as well and I must explain that they have some very unusual “crested” cactus like the one pictured below. Also look for the large crested saguaro which is quite rare.

Carefree, AZ – Enchanted Pumpkin Garden , 2015 – I

Just because we have temperatures over 100 degrees in the month of October doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate Halloween. That holiday is alive and well in the Sonoran Desert and the town of Carefree, AZ is in a spooky mood!

The Carefree Desert Gardensis hosting a pumpkin fest this year and there is a schedule of events for family fun. Some of the days provide opportunities to watch sculptors at work creating their special brand of Jack-O-Lanterns. You can find more information by clicking here.

To preserve the carved pumpkins, they are treated with a brine mixture and some are submerged in brine containers. In the picture below, for example, there is an artificial saguaro cactus containing a brine-filled glass container housing a carved pumpkin. Signs warn that although the saguaro may be fake, the needles are real; one way to discourage touching!

Saguaro with brined pumpkin

In the close up you will notice that there is a highlight at the top which is created by a blacklight. The gardens are open after dark and my assumption is the lighting adds to the mystery of the presentation.

There were many carvings in brine such as this bulldog

and a devilish character!

*Other exhibits include pumpkins posed in human-like activities:

It’s not easy being a pumpkin the desert so a nap is required every now and then

or perhaps a break relaxing by the pool.

There are more than just pumpkins. There are witches hats although not the standard black issue.

Of course it is all about the carving by master pumpkin carver Ray Villafane.

Lost in the Desert Without Water for Six Days? Eat Ants!

Reginald Foggerdy Survives in the Australian Desert

I live in Maricopa County, AZ which is part of the Sonoran Desert. My wife and I do a lot of hiking and many times it is in the desert. There are a few rules when hiking in such a hostile environment especially during the summer months. Actually, these are good rules to follow whenever you hike!

Rule #1 – ALWAYS make sure you have enough water. A gallon or more per person is not unusual for a long hike in the summer when it is hot.

Rule #2 – Dress properly. Wear a hat, appropriate shoes, pants and tops. We have met people in flip-flops and tank tops who had no idea where they were as we came across them in the hills of the desert. This can end very badly.

Rule #3 – Tell people where you are going to hike and don’t deviate from the planned route without notifying them.

Of course we can go on and on, but these are a good starting point. Apparently, Reginald Foggerdy, 62 wasn’t prepared as he went hunting in the Great Victoria Desert in Western Australia.

Without any water, Mr. Foggerdy managed to survive for six days by eating ants and sitting under a tree. He is one lucky person!.

You can read the rest of the story here and see pictures and a video there as well.

Lou Holtz: Undergraduate Commencement Address 2015

I have used a number of quotes from Lou Holtz in my STATUS QUOtes postings. Despite his excellent achievements, he is still very humble. Don’t be fooled by his appearance of being a simple “down home” boy. He is a brilliant, compassionate person who has a lot to offer for those willing to listen.

While this speech was delivered at a Catholic university and has some strong religious tones, everyone can learn from what Lou Holtz has to say. He is funny, witty, poignant and spiritual. I don’t think you will regret taking 20 minutes of your time to listen and watch what he has to say. Look at is an investment in your future.

Ready for A Hoverboard?

You might be asking yourself: “What is a Hoverboard?” A hover board is a personal transportation device that is like a smaller, lighter, less robust cousin of the Segway. Think of it as a motorized skateboard of sorts.

Below is a video that demonstrates the basic function of a hoverboard. Some of the points highlighted in the video include:

  • Device weight…
  • Maximum speed…
  • Range..
  • Max Load…
  • Price…

Once you have your hoverboard, and if you practice enough, perhaps you will be able to use it to create a YouTube viral video like the one below. Good luck with that!!!

Disclaimer – Any device that is motorized and/or offers transportation options has the potential to cause physical and financial harm. Take due precautions and considerations when using such a device. Parental supervision is strongly recommended.

If the truth be told, and why not, I like cats, but I love dogs. In my experience dogs have personalities with depth. When I say I love dogs, I mean dogs like Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds and other similar large breeds. I love to look into their eyes when you can actually visualize them “thinking.”

The Internet has had several articles about Loki recently and I wanted to share his story with visitors to JBRish.com.

The UK’s Daily Mail has an article which will fill in some of the details, but the real story is told through the multitude of photographs. As you look through the pictures you will see that Loki looks very happy?!

If you want to see more photos that weren’t in the above article, you can check “Loki’s” Instagram Page
