A Sports Legacy for North Phoenix

Legacy Sports Arena Opening Sign

New ground has recently been broken in North Phoenix, both figuratively and literally. Just a short distance from the intersection of I-17 and Route 303, construction of the Legacy Sports Arena has begun as part of the Gateway Community.

Legacy groundbreaking ceremony

Cave Creek resident Robert Eaton and his team are working hard to complete an ambitious and profoundly different sports facility with an anticipated opening scheduled for the Fall of 2020. The plans call for two NHL-sized hockey rinks with the latest LED technology employed via glass flooring that can provide lighted boundary lines for basketball courts, dodgeball, soccer, lacrosse and for the fastest growing sport in the United States and Canada…a dozen pickleball courts!

Construction starting at the Legacy Sports Complex

As Rob pointed out during the groundbreaking ceremony, the name Legacy is a tribute to families and family traditions. The name also acknowledges the contributions of active and veteran military members and first-responders and the playing surfaces will be named to honor them.

Rob Eaton detailing the Sports Arena at the groundbreaking

The design was developed to bring the best experiences to both players and sports fans via open space viewing throughout the facility. The arena will incorporate some of the latest developments in green energy with both passive and active low-energy designs part of which will include rooftop solar panels generating electricity year round.

The Legacy Sports Arena portends to be one of the nicest sports facilities in the area and perhaps nation-wide with a restaurant, gymnasium, concession venue, artificial ice rink and other sports resources upstairs.

Drawing of the Legacy Sports Complex

The Legacy sports building would be innovative as a stand alone project, but Rob Eaton and the designers had more than that in mind when they created a vision for a destination facility. Hoping to attract tournament play, conventions, family vacationers and special events, in addition to the 170,000+ square foot sports arena, there will also be a hotel conceived specifically for players and spectators.

Drawing of the Legacy Hotel and Sports Arena

The lodging will incorporate larger team rooms and special amenities via available suites for team members as well as rooms for sports oriented families and guests.

Everyone who enjoys watching or playing sports should be excited about the future of the Legacy Sports Project. Congratulations to everyone involved for creating such a strong vision that will provide wonderful opportunities for the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Best wishes for much success!

  • Players will be coming from 48 states and 16 countries.
  • Players range from age 11 through age 86.
  • National television: The event will be covered by CBS Sports Network and live streamed on CBS Sports Live from May 1 – May 4 on their app. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the finals at a later date.”

********** Don’t Play Pickleball Like a Tree, Move **********

The ultimate goal of both players on a team to work their way up to the NVZ and hold that position can, at times, be carried to an extreme especially when a dink game ensues. In the video below, Jordan Briones, – Prime Time Pickleball Coach – details when it is advisable to back up and move away from the NVZ line as a smart strategy.

********** Partner Communication **********

Wherever and whenever we play pickleball, it is always a good idea to develop some method of communicating with our partners. I have probably shared this video before, but it deserves to be repeated.

Did you ever notice how much better your “team” does when you play several games with the same partner? Generally speaking, that is because some “communication” has evolved.

Thanks to Mark Renneson from Third Shot Sports for explaining why!

Hello Phoenix Area Players:

****** Community Center Pickleball Closings/Changes ******

This is the time of the year when the schools are having their recesses for a variety of reasons and the Community Centers are altering their daytime pickleball schedules. I contacted the Phoenix Community Centers and this is my understanding of what will be happening this March. The information below refers solely to the printed pickleball schedule. It might be wise to call ahead if you have any doubt and/or you ar driving a distance to get to the venue.

Beuf CC – The person to whom I spoke was unsure of the pickleball schedule. They thought perhaps it might change or at least have reduced pickleball hours during the week of March 18. They advised that I call back toward the end of next week.

Deer Valley CC – March 18 – 22 – Pickleball Canceled

Paradise Valley CC – March 11 – 15th Pickleball Canceled

Pecos CC – No Change to the printed schedule

Sunnyslope CC – Check Back the week of March 18 – 22

Washington Activity Center – No Change

********** For Those Who Have Read This Far **********

Serving for Success

At one time, the theory behind the pickleball serve was to use it just to start the point. Coaches would advise the players to serve high and deep. One of the problems with this is that a good player may be able to take that ball and send it back to the serving team with a lot of speed and good placement making it hard for the serving team to make a good third shot!

Times have changed and with the evolution of pickleball, so has the the serve. A number of the current championship players are now using the serve as a weapon. Learning to serve fast and with a lower arc than the older “high and deep” admonishment may give your opponents less time to set up for a strategic return and give the serving team an easier third shot.

Mark Renneson of Third Shot Sports offers this advice via a video:

********** Pickleball Strategy 301 – Six Rules of the Fast Game **********

Jim Baker has another very good pickleball video that is aimed at the average plus to advanced player. There is a certain level of skill necessary, especially those when players are positioned at the net.

Hello Phoenix Area Players:

I just want to touch base with those on the email list about a few items.

**Community Centers Closed on 1/21/19 – Martin Luther King Day **

Normal schedule will resume on Tuesday, 1/22!

********** Meeting w/USAPA SW Regional Director **********

Larry Lite, USAPA Southwest Regional Director, will be meeting with the North Central Arizona Ambassadors on February 1, 2019, to provide an update on the various programs being offered by the USAPA. He will go over his goals for the region, an update on the Ambassador program and a discussion about issues and concerns amongst our ambassadors. There will be opportunities for ambassadors to share their questions and ideas as well.

I will keep you posted regarding pertinent information!

********** Calling the Ball In or Out **********

Over the last several weeks I have heard some players make line calls by saying: “I think the ball was out!” We can probably all agree that on some courts the lines are difficult to read and calling balls correctly may be a bit tricky at times, but let’s examine the sentence above.

It seems to imply that there is some doubt as to whether the ball was “in” or “out!” In such an instance, we can look to the official rulebook to learn how to deal with this situation.

Here is what the rulebook states:

“6.D.3. The opponent gets the benefit of the doubt on line calls made. Any ball that cannot be called “out” will be considered “in.” A player cannot claim a “let” because the ball was not seen or there is uncertainty. A player may appeal to the referee to make the call if he or she did not clearly see the ball land. If the referee is unable to make the call, the ball is “in.” [ USAPA & IFP Official Tournament Rulebook, p. 31 ]

The remedy to “thinking” the ball was out, in my opinion, lies in the first sentence, i.e. the benefit of the doubt goes to the opponent. Secondly, “Any ball that cannot be called ‘out’ will be considered ‘in’.” Careful reading of that sentence seems to imply that if the ball cannot definitively be called “out” it is considered to be “in.”

When playing recreational pickleball, we should always be in a position to give the opponents the benefit of the doubt. After all, isn’t that what sportsmanship is?

********** Balls Coming on the Court **********

In a recent post on my website, Pickleball – Let’s Talk Etiquette, I included the above section and I also addressed the issue of pickleballs from other games coming on to the court. This can be dangerous at worst and often frustrating at best! If you are interested in that subject, you can read the post [if you read the item above, skip to the second part at the link below]:

********** For Those Who Have Read This Far **********

This is related to the idea I mentioned in a previous newsletter, i.e. having a plan. When you return the ball, do you try to return it to a particular spot. Better players are able to hit a target spot whether it be the opponent’s forehand or down the middle.

The video below gives some good pointers, especially about the return of serve. This one tip may help you improve your game even if you need to make adjustments in the course of a game.

********** Avoid Long Waits Between Games **********

The indoor pickleball venues are crowded this time of the year. One way to avoid long waiting times between games is to arrive a bit later during the scheduled day. I understand that this is not possible for everyone, but you may have noticed that towards the end of the session, the crowds thin out. Last week a group was playing almost nonstop during the last hour at one of the community centers.

********** From Intermediate To Advanced **********

How to Move from 3.5-4.0
By Mark Renneson

What does it take to move from being an intermediate player to an advanced one? Well, there isn’t a magic bullet but there are a few things that I’ve noticed have made the difference. Here’s a short list of what I think separates the two levels.

Be More Consistent. Higher level players don’t really hit fundamentally different shots than their less-skilled counterparts. But what they do is hit quality shots more often. While a 3.5 might be able to hit a deep return 5 out of ten times, the 4.0 can do it 7. The difference is often not much more than having a clear intention.

On a related note, if you miss many “easy balls” you’re going to have a tough time advancing a level. Standard volleys, dinks, serves and returns should be near 100% success. Missing them should be a surprise.

Finish Points. Strong players are good at ending points when they have the chance. Whether it is identifying angles, finding a gap or using speed effectively, strong players capitalize on opportunities.

Have a Plan. Intermediate players often look (and feel) like they are just ‘trying to survive’ on the court. Advanced players have clear plans. When you are under fire pinned at the baseline, for example, a good plan would be to calmly play a drop that forces an upward hit from the other team. 4.0s try to do this. Most 3.5s just hit the ball back hard (or lob).

The above article is courtesy of Third Shot Sports

********** For Those Who Have Read This Far **********

Hitting a Worthy Groundstroke

When I teach pickleball to beginners, I emphasize the ideal groundstroke position, i.e. shoulders perpendicular to the net when possible. Of course if you are running hither and yon trying to get to an angled shot, etc. all bets are off.

Here is a video explaining a technique for the groundstroke.

********** City of Phoenix Vendors **********

I have been asked to circulate the message below for those who would like to work in City of Phoenix facilities coaching, selling or teaching. If you don’t have any interest in these opportunities feel free to skip to the next section.

The following information is for becoming a vendor with the City of Phoenix to provide classes or supplies with the Parks and Recreation Department.

Currently the City’s process requires potential vendors to register with the City using a two-step process. Step one, which can be done immediately, enables you to acquire your official City of Phoenix vendor number and be placed on a Qualified Vendor notification list. You will be notified by e-mail when to complete Step two. This process will require you to submit your qualifications with the Parks and Recreation Department to be eligible for the Qualified Vendor List (QVL). This second “QVL” process is only opened twice a year, in late fall and mid spring and again, you will be sent an e-mail notifying you that the list is open. Please click the attached link for further information.

********** Sunnyslope Community Center Sign Up **********

NOTE – This effort is not a part of, or endorsed or sponsored by the City of Phoenix/Parks and Recreation Department. This is an independent attempt to facilitate pickleball play at Sunnyslope CC.

In an effort to support and facilitate pickleball at Sunnyslope as other venues are becoming more crowded, I have created a SignUp Genius page. By using SignUp Genius to indicate that you will be playing at Sunnyslope on a particular day, others will know if there will be enough attendees to have a robust and enjoyable day of pickleball.

If you are interested, please read the description and instructions at this link:

Sunnyslope SignUp Genius

For those interested in playing at Sunnyslope CC, you can get started by scrolling down to the calendar at the link above and click on a date. Enter your information including your email and click Submit and Sign Up. YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT although it is handy. If you run into difficulty, I will try to assist for the first few weeks until the system becomes familiar to those using it – email me.

PS – Low attendance is good for more court time for beginners, those who want extended practice or teaching!

********** Reminder Week of Thanksgiving **********

November 21 is a regular day for community centers. City holiday closures for Thanksgiving – 11/22 & 11/23

********** End of an Era – Onix Pure 2 Orange Pickleball **********

The Bad News

In my effort to purchase replacement Onix Pure 2 Orange Indoor Pickleballs for use at Paradaise Valley CC, I learned that these pickleballs are being discontinued. Many people enjoyed playing with this particular ball because it had a nice bounce, responded well to the paddle and it was very durable.

If you enjoy the Onix Pure 2 and would like to prolong the inevitable you can try to purchase some while supplies last.

There will continue to be a Pure 2 pickleball, but it is designed for outdoor use.

The Good News

Onix is producing a new version of the Orange indoor pickleball which is called the “Fuse.” It is my understanding that the Fuse will also be manufactured in yellow. Communications with other PB ambassadors indicate that the new Fuse does react a bit differently during play, but is very similar. One drawback has been that the ball does not hold up to play as long as the Pure 2 did.

Also on the plus side, the new Onix Fuse Indoor balls have been USAPA Approved for tournaments and I always enjoy playing with sanctioned equipment. [It seemed to me that the Fuse is closer to the color of the original Pure 2 than the pictures indicate.]

Notice that the Fuse does not have a dark imprint of the word ONIX (as of this date) and the FUSE will have USAPA Approved in black ink.

********** Halloween Pickles Came to Play **********

There were a number of players who were at PVCC on 10/31 and they were in the Halloween Spirit. Can you tell which one of these Pickle-ball-players was the dill pickle and which one was the sweet pickle?

********** WORLD TEAM PICKLEBALL LEAGUES COMING SOON **********

Interclub pickleball leagues may be starting in our area soon. Please check www.worldteampickleball.com to learn about their activities. I have been contacted by people who are trying to organize local leagues starting during the winter of 2019. I will share details as they become available to me. I just wanted our players to have a “heads up.”

********** For Those Who Have Read This Far **********

In a recent Internet article Sarah Ansboury, Professional Pickleball Player and Coach makes a very bold statement:

“…today I actually am going to suggest something that will instantly improve your game.”

The issue around which she bases this advice is related to the question – “Does your team have a plan (strategy) for the return of serve and perhaps the third shot?”

She challenges us to do more than just try to get the ball back over the net, and to return it to a player or place on the court to support a strategy. If this is currently beyond your skill level or interest, don’t worry. It is still an interesting read and offers something to which we can all aspire.

You can read MAKE THESE PICKLEBALL DECISIONS BEFORE EVERY POINT by clicking the link/title.

PS – Even during non-competitive club play, it is a positive thing to have a plan before the ball comes at you!

Hello Phoenix Area Players:

All seems to be going well at our pickleball venues so I just want to check in and bring a couple of items to your attention.

********** Paradise Valley CC **********

It has been suggested that perhaps players might want to show their Halloween Spirit by dressing in costume on Wednesday, October 31. No pressure here, but it might be fun if this is in your comfort zone. Keep in mind that you don’t have to play in the costume once everyone has seen you.

The upcoming league

It is my understanding that the Pickleball League – Seniors 55 + is similar to past tournaments and each individual will amass points while playing with other players. There are no set teams.

If you are interested, use the link below to sign up – NOTE: There is a fee! If you have questions please call PVCC – 602-495-3777

https://apm.activecommunities.com/phoenix/Activity_Search/pickleball-league-seniors-55/27167

Pickleball Purchase

We are in the process of purchasing additional Onix Pure 2 Orange Pickleballs. If you enjoy playing with this particular pickleball, please consider donating one dollar to help keep these in supply. I will be collecting money over the next week or two. Thank you to those who have already contributed!

********** Sunnyslope Community Center *********

Are you having difficulty getting enough court time? Do you know three other pickleballers who would like to play as much as they can? I understand that Sunnyslope CC has had light attendance to-date, but this is likely to change as our seasonal residents arrive.

If you want to take advantage of having lots of available court time, check out Sunnyslope Community Center for lots of play. You can bring a bucket of balls and practice serves, slams, etc.

The schedule, as always, is published on my website – https://jbrish.com/pickleball/ SCROLL DOWN to see the current, pinkish Phoenix Community Center Schedule.

********** A USAPA NVZ Rules Question *********

Pickleball — You Make the Call — NVZ Partner Grab

The Scenario:

You and your partner are involved in a multi-shot exchange at the non-volley zone with the other team. After a couple of back-and-forths a ball is hit to your partner and they volley it. In the act of the volley your partner begins to "teeter" toward the NVZ and it becomes apparent he/she is going to step into the NVZ.

NOTE: According to USAPA rules, it would be a fault if a player's momentum forces them to step into the NVZ after a successful volley.

The Answer according to USAPA Rules:

It would be "legal" for a player to grab or pull their partner to prevent them from entering the NVZ and avoid causing a fault AS LONG AS the partner doing the grabbing is not themselves in violation of the NVZ rule, i.e. remains outside the NVZ during the maneuver.

********** Tournament Player Ratings Update *********

The USAPA has worked hard to develop an effective ratings system for players. This is an important process that will allow players to have a realistic assessment of their skills in relationship to others who play in tournaments. As expected, this is an ongoing process which seeks to improve the ratings system over time.

********** Dear Established Players – Thank You! *********

Thank you to all established pickleball players who play with our beginners. I have taught a number of introduction to PB sessions lately and naturally the participants are hesitant to show up for daily play because they don’t know how it works or they are concerned they lack the necessary skills.

Beginners need to play and learn and everyone who agrees to play a couple of games with them is giving them a gift of time, patience and learning. We were all beginners once so thank you for caring to share your encouragement and talents with others.

PS – I am still collecting non-wooden paddles that are seeking a new home and/or are no longer in use.

Easily Add Extra Points to Your Score

Would you like an easy way to gain an advantage during competitive play? Would you enjoy adding an extra point or two to your team’s score with little effort? Learn how to avoid hitting an “out” ball and giving the other team another chance.

This is an easy technique to learn and once you watch this video, it will become much easier. Don’t hit an out ball and give the other team another shot!

Below is the link to one of my recent blog posts with the video by pickleball coach, Joe Baker. He explains the strategy and the physics (don’t worry it is simple) behind his approach.

Do yourself a favor and spend ten minutes watching this important video!

********** That’s All For Now *********

I hope you are all doing well as we enter the beginning of the holiday season. It is wonderful to see our friends from out of town returning to our courts.

Stay well and I hope to see you on the courts!

Regards,

Jeff Ross
