While Half Dome is always impressive as it rises up from a multitude of vantage points at Yosemite, during the sunrise and sunset hours it takes on a special majesty. I particularly like this photograph with the contrasting dark colors of green and some purple highlights among the wildflowers in the foreground.

This field was only a short walk from our lodging and it was difficult to get enough of this view!

Fact: Did you know that the North Face outdoor company uses a stylized version of Half Dome as their Logo?

We have an expression in our house – nested bests. What this means is that you are in the best place with the best people doing the best thing at the best time; nested bests. There aren’t many nested bests moments, but when they happen, they are worth savoring and recalling.

The photo below is a variation on the theme – nested pets!

Photography – Eye of the Storm

There are some occasions when a photographer uses his or her skill to create a superb photograph and we can admire it and appreciate the craft. There are other instances when that skill is accompanied by a bit of serendipity and the perfect moment is caught.

The picture below from the getolympus website shows Jeffrey McPheeters’ photograph of what appears to be an eye in the middle of a cluster of lightning. The label implies that this was photographed in Kansas which is known for some terrific storms. This is an amazing scene. Thanks to Olympus and Jeffrey for sharing!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 42 (Dog Lake near Tuolumne Meadows)

Dog Lake is located in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite and is one of the popular day hikes. Many hikers combine the Dog Lake hike with that of Lembert Dome as there are junctions for each vantage point along the main trail.

The view of the lake is very pretty and the snow capped mountains lend an addition flare to the scene.

NOTE: “In 1898 Robert Marshall of the US Geological Survey visited the lake and found an abandoned sheepdog with a litter of puppies” and thus the lake received its somewhat unimaginative name. ( source )

It was hard to resist stopping every time we passed the Tunnel View pull off. The panoramas were stunning even if the time of day was not quite right for a photograph. To see El Capitan (mid-left) and Half Dome playing off of each other was very special.

NOTE – This tends to be one of the more crowded areas of the park when it comes to finding parking spaces. Many people want to stop to see this view and so do the tour buses. Plan to be patient and leave enough time.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 29 (Hetch Hetchy Wooden Bridge)

A Wooden Bridge Along the Wapama Falls TrailThis small, wooden bridge along the Wapama Falls Trail in Hetch Hetchy conjured images of the era of John Muir

Most hikers enjoy a path or trail that has a canopy which offers some relief from the sun on hot days. On an overcast day it can also provide dramatic lighting and atmosphere. As you can see, this path was along the waterline of the reservoir and combined the best of the woodsy ambience along with a view of the lake. It was the perfect complement to the beautiful surroundings.

Alumroot-Heuchera micrantha

This wildflower is a relative of one of the shade gardener’s favorites, Coral Bells. It is Alumroot,Heuchera micrantha

As we hiked the trails of Yosemite, one of my favorite subjects was wildflowers. Along the rock faces of the mountains were a wide variety of plants which had taken root in the crevices. During the late afternoon as we were hiking the Four Mile Trail from Glacier Point to the valley, the sun was coming through the canopy and highlighted this particular Alumroot, Heuchera micrantha which was striking.

It apparently is a relative of the more familiar Coral Bells which many gardeners covet as a plant that does well in the shade or dappled light.

North Dome reflected clearly in Mirror Lake.

On one of our attempts to hike the Valley Loop Trail, the signs misled us (that’s another story) to Mirror Lake. This was serendipitous as it was a beautiful day to catch the reflection of North Dome in the calm waters. The loop around Mirror Lake is fairly long and a number of times we were stopped to assist others in locating or re-locating the actual trail.

One piece of advice I can offer is to purchase the detailed map of the Yosemite Valley trails. It is worth the $4 US that we paid at the time and would be an excellent resource for those planning to hike the valley trails.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 26 (Olmsted Point – Lone Tree)

Lone Tree at Olmsted Point

Olmsted Point has a view of Half Dome. This lone tree is trying to grab center stage.

Omsted Point is easy to pass on the way to other locations, but it certainly is worth a stop. We were on the way to Lembert Dome when we stopped to take a few photographs.

What I liked about this particular photo is the tree near the center. Although it would normally be a supporting cast member with Half Dome straight ahead (peaking out just above the curve of the hill in the center), it steals the scene in its own right. Naturally, there are nice pictures of Half Dome to be captured from this view as well.

The Merced river and the waterfalls throughout the park were at near peak during our visit to Yosemite. This picture of Nevada Falls underscores nature’s power and beauty. Our lodge was close to Yosemite Valley Falls and we enjoyed the low, sleep-inducing roar throughout the night.
