The Final Post – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 305

Half dome, El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall

Half dome, El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall

As we prepared to visit the park and hike many of the trails, we realized how overwhelming a visit to Yosemite might be. It is vast and can be daunting. When I first started this project nearly a year ago, I wanted to provide information for those planning to visit Yosemite National Park.

JBRish is a small, narrowly focused blog that I curate as a hobby and hopefully as a service to others who might want to share and discuss many of the same ideas about the skills and interests that I have.

I was hoping to have a dialogue with future and past Yosemite visitors to create a resource as a reference for those who might desire to visit the park. Unfortunately, my posts have generated only a small amount of interest.

I have shared photographs of most of the areas we visited and besides alternate views of places and things I have already posted, I didn’t think there was much new that would compel me to continue the series. Couple this with my recent computer troubles which set me back a bit, and I think it is time to end the project.
I am hopeful that at least a few people will find the information I shared helpful.

I don’t think I could have chosen a better photograph for the final post. The above scene captured from Tunnel View showing two of the major icons of Yosemite, El Capitan and Half Dome along with Bridalveil Falls, provides an example of the amazing natural beauty of this national park.

If you love nature or hiking, I can’t recommend a trip to Yosemite more highly! Just realize that it will be crowded and remote. Bring with you all of what you might need as supplies and food are expensive. If you do have questions, feel free to post them in the comment section of any JBRish post and I will try to respond promptly.

El Capitan’s Eastern Exposure – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 293

To end this series of different views of El Capitan, many of which are similar to previous photographs, in the picture above, I am providing a view of El Capitan’s eastern exposure taken from the nearby meadow.

El Capitan Midline – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 292

The previous two photographs show El Capitan with the sun coming strongly from the west and blocking details and a photograph taken during the early evening hours from the west.

The photograph above presents El Capitan from a midline perspective somewhere between the east and west side. The “nose” ridge is almost straight ahead. I was standing in the nearby meadow when this photo was snapped.

In this view you can note the color variations, ridges and other geographic formations.

View of El Capitan from the West – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 291

El Capitan as seen from the west

El Capitan is one of the major sights Yosemite has to offer and it’s figurative shadow is broadly cast across the Yosemite Valley. It is seen from numerous venues and areas making it hard to ignore.

The photograph above is taken from the west of the giant granite mountain and the ridge seen between the break in the trees off to the right is referred to as El Capitan’s nose.

El Capitan Photographed Looking Into the Sun – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 290

El Capitan from the Four Mile Trail

El Capitan from the Four Mile Trail

After leaving Glacier Point, we decided to hike the Four Mile Trail down to the Valley. It was already mid-afternoon and the sun would be intense as we were hiking westward.

Taking pictures into the sun was tricky. The photograph above was taken with my “least advanced” and presumably “less capable” camera. The Canon AS 590 IS which is ancient in relationship to current point-and-shoot standards.

While the picture is good for a record of the trip, much of the detail is gone and or washed out. To salvage the picture and make it a bit more artistic in nature, I converted it to black and white.

Which version do you like better; the black and white or the color version? Leave your remarks in the comment section.

El Capitan A Massive Form – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 261

El Capitan from the meadow

El Capitan’s massive presence

Yesterday’s post demonstrated how perspective can ‘fool’ the eye and that very close up El Capitan doesn’t look much different than other large rocky mountains, but step back a bit and it will reveal it’s massive form when juxtaposed against its natural surroundings.

The green of the valley proves to be a good foil and border for the large form festooned with highlights in browns, grays and blacks.

El Capitan in Black and White – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 259

El Capitan in Black and White

El Capitan in black and white

We were hiking the Four Mile Trail in the mid-to-late afternoon with El Capitan off to the west. The position of the sun made it difficult to take photographs with much color and detail. The fact that there were no clouds this day also createded harsher lighting.

One thing I do like about this photograph, however, is the way the textures show in the duotone version. This mountain is craggy beyond description which is probably one of the reasons climbers like to ascend along one of the routes.

We hiked in the meadow area seen in the bottom right and also in and along the trees to the left on one or more of our forays. You might be able to make out one of the bends of the Merced River just west (left) of the meadow).

El Capitan – Western View – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 258

El Capitan

El Capitan from a western view

Not to be outdone by all of the dome talk, El Capitan exerts its presence over Yosemite Valley. Anchoring the west end while Half Dome dominates the more easterly location, it draws rock climbers and hikers alike.

Tunnel View Moving In (4/4) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 236

Tunnel View

Vertical photograph from Tunnel View

Over the last few days, I was addressing the issue many amateur photographers have when they come upon a magnificent scene and try to decide the best way to frame that photograph for maximum impact.

The photograph above is my last example in this series and as readers will readily note, I decided upon a portrait (vertical) orientation to position the two major icons, El Capitan and Half Dome, where they would receive the most attention and balance the picture.

I am going to create a post about this particular picture and how I edited it to maximize the impact it makes. I will alert YOY readers when it is available.

Tunnel View Moving Closer (3/4) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 235

Tunnel View

Another Photo from Tunnel View

As I explained yesterday, I was trying to capture the “best” picture of El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View. My system theoretically held the formula. I would start with wide shots and zoom in closer and closer to try to capture the most appealing picture.

This is another photo from near the same vantage point as that in the previous post. I tried to use silhouettes of the trees to help frame the icons, but I don’t think it works as well as I had envisioned. Of course Half Dome and El Capitan show well, but I think the silhouettes are distracting. Thank goodness for digital cameras and more attempts!
