Tunnel View Moving In (4/4) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 236

Tunnel View

Vertical photograph from Tunnel View

Over the last few days, I was addressing the issue many amateur photographers have when they come upon a magnificent scene and try to decide the best way to frame that photograph for maximum impact.

The photograph above is my last example in this series and as readers will readily note, I decided upon a portrait (vertical) orientation to position the two major icons, El Capitan and Half Dome, where they would receive the most attention and balance the picture.

I am going to create a post about this particular picture and how I edited it to maximize the impact it makes. I will alert YOY readers when it is available.

Tunnel View Moving Closer (3/4) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 235

Tunnel View

Another Photo from Tunnel View

As I explained yesterday, I was trying to capture the “best” picture of El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View. My system theoretically held the formula. I would start with wide shots and zoom in closer and closer to try to capture the most appealing picture.

This is another photo from near the same vantage point as that in the previous post. I tried to use silhouettes of the trees to help frame the icons, but I don’t think it works as well as I had envisioned. Of course Half Dome and El Capitan show well, but I think the silhouettes are distracting. Thank goodness for digital cameras and more attempts!

Tunnel View (1/4) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 233

Tunnel View

An encompassing photo of the valley from Tunnel View

Much of the literature about Yosemite National Park refers to the Tunnel View overlook as a “must see” stop for any visitor. This vantage point is held in such reverence by those who have visited the park and have written about it, that it becomes a figurative “do or die” goal for many.

Considering the popularity of Tunnel View and the number of people who are drawn to it, it has a limited parking area the geography being what it is. There are actually two areas; an upper and a lower. If you have patience, you can wait for a spot to open. If you have two or more people in your group, you can take turns behind the wheel while the others stop to visit the overlook and capture some memorable photos.

The vista is certainly a beauty. At the time we took the above picture, it was nearing the “golden hour” for photography and the colors were delightful.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 156 (Colorful Sun on Tunnel View)

Sun setting on Tunnel View

The Scene from Tunnel View – Early Evening

We had been past Tunnel View a prior to this and stopped a couple of times, but this particular stop came closest to having the best lighting. Earlier stops were near midday or when light was harsh. This scene has a bit of a fall look because of the orange/brown trees, but those are trees that are dead or dying. Much like other areas of the United States, drought and insects have taken their toll on the trees in our national parks.

Tunnel view is a major stop on the way to or from Glacier Point. It is almost always crowded. Buses, campers, cars, hikers, nearly everyone stops at Tunnel View to take photographs. My advice is if you do stop, move around. Don’t stand in just one place. There are so many wonderful views to capture.

El Capitan (left) and Half Dome (middle) are obvious to most visitors, but the jutting series of rocks the right, just in from the edge, is Cathedral Rocks.

I missed getting Bridalveil Falls in the shot. It was there, but I failed to take the picture from an angle that would have included it. I forgot that it was just off to the right. Also…if you have a wide angle lens, that would be a great tool for this vantage point.

NOTE – I do have a couple of previous pictures from Tunnel View with the falls in them, but the light was not as good in those shots.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 134 (Tunnel View – Theodore Roethke Quote)

Theodore Roethke - Tunnel View Picture Quote

“Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley.” – Theodore Roethke

This quote in particular speaks to some of the sentiments I have shared over the past week or so when I spoke of my exhilaration when discovering nature’s miracles large and small. Roethke sums it up quite well in his quote.

**NOTE** – I will provide the Metadata for the picture below, but it isn’t as applicable as it might have been because the photograph was converted to black and white via Lightroom. It was originally captured as a color image.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 108 (Another Pass – Tunnel View)

The main players seen from tunnel viewAs we passed by Tunnel View again, the color of light was changing and painting the landscape

This picture taken from the Tunnel View overlook and parking area shows the sun beginning to reach that golden stage. We had just finished hiking in the area and were heading back to Yosemite Valley. Although we were tired, the scene was so beautiful, we just had to stop.

The main players, Half Dome (background), El Capitan (foreground – left) and some of the “pinnacles” (foreground right – perhaps Cathedral Rocks) were exhibiting their finery for all the onlookers; and there were many.

This scene is awe inspiring. Changes of the sun’s position and light as well as the seasons provide variations on the theme; daily weekly, monthly!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 66 (Three Brothers)

Bridal Veil Falls, the Three Brothers

Bridal Veil Falls and the Three Brothers photographed from Tunnel View

Bridal Veil Falls was putting on quite a show as the Three Brothers (rock formation) looked on. A typical shot from this vantage point will often include El Capitan which is off to the left.

I wanted the other “players” to have their own moment.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 50 (El Cap and Half Dome from Tunnel View)

El Capitan and Half Dome as seen from Tunnel View

A Warm glow was settling over El Capitan and Half Dome as seen from Tunnel View.

We had stopped at Tunnel View prior to this, but the light was more inviting as we cam upon this scene at this time of day and we were compelled to stop once again. El Capitan can be seen in the upper left with Half Dome close to dead-center. It is awesome to see both major icons of Yosemite in this orientation.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 33 (El Cap and Half Dome – Tunnel View

El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View

El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View

It was hard to resist stopping every time we passed the Tunnel View pull off. The panoramas were stunning even if the time of day was not quite right for a photograph. To see El Capitan (mid-left) and Half Dome playing off of each other was very special.

NOTE – This tends to be one of the more crowded areas of the park when it comes to finding parking spaces. Many people want to stop to see this view and so do the tour buses. Plan to be patient and leave enough time.
