Lakes of Yosemite 3/4 (Dog) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 301

“Dog

Dog Lake was an interesting side-venture.

Dog Lake was quite frankly an afterthought. We hadn’t intended to make the side journey, but when we realized how close it was to the Lembert Dome Trail in the Tuolumne Meadows area, we decided to investigate. Compared to some of the other lakes, and with the understanding we only viewed it from one vantage point, it was less remarkable than the previous lakes we visited.

Certainly pretty with the snow coated mountains in the background, it lacked the personality of Mirror Lake or Tenaya Lake. Perhaps the distance from the mountains or other geographic wonders lessened the impact.

Lembert Dome to Dog Lake – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 249

A view of Dog Lake

Dog Lake

As we were making our way to the top of Lembert Dome, several hikers approached us and inquired as to the location of Dog Lake. They were not native English speakers so we did the best we could in communicating that they were on the right trail, but had to veer to the west at some point to reach Dog Lake.

As we returned from the dome, we decided to head to Dog Lake ourselves. The lake was very pretty with the snow covered mountains in the distance. The picture above was taken from the southwestern shore which was quite soggy.

Dog Lake- Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 201

A view from the shore of Dog Lakee

Dog Lake is near Sentinel Dome

If you are hiking near Sentinel Dome or in and around Tuolumne Meadows, the hike to Dog Lake may be of interest. It is actually a side trail off of the main trail to Sentinel Dome. It is not too far from that junction and may provide an extension to a day of hiking.

When we visited, the water was very cold and the shore was muddy because of the recent snow and rains. In drier weather, it would be easier to explore more of the shore line. We were getting to the end of our hiking day and we just stopped for a few pictures and to assess the lake.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 94 (Dog Lake Expanse)

Expanse of Dog LakeUnlike yesterday’s post (YOY #93) this shows the expanse of Dog Lake

Yesterday’s photograph of Dog Lake, while picturesque, did not display the full expanse of the lake itself. I thought I would show a picture taken from a similar vantage point at the lake to allow readers to appreciate the complete beauty of the mid-afternoon scene.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 93 (Dog Lake)

Dog Lake framed by a tree branch

Dog Lake and distant mountains framed by a large tree branch

While hiking to Lembert Dome, there will be signs for the Dog Lake trail. These two hikes combine well and I would encourage all those who are fit enough to complete both hikes to visit each destination. We were at Dog Lake when snow was still covering the mountain tops and it did add a nice contrast to the scene, but recent rains and snow melt rendered parts of the shoreline muddy.

By framing the lake and distant mountains with the large branch, the viewer’s eye is drawn into the scene.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 42 (Dog Lake near Tuolumne Meadows)

Picturesque Dog LakePicturesque Dog Lake

Dog Lake is located in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite and is one of the popular day hikes. Many hikers combine the Dog Lake hike with that of Lembert Dome as there are junctions for each vantage point along the main trail.

The view of the lake is very pretty and the snow capped mountains lend an addition flare to the scene.

NOTE: “In 1898 Robert Marshall of the US Geological Survey visited the lake and found an abandoned sheepdog with a litter of puppies” and thus the lake received its somewhat unimaginative name. ( source )
