Lakes of Yosemite 3/4 (Dog) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 301

“Dog

Dog Lake was an interesting side-venture.

Dog Lake was quite frankly an afterthought. We hadn’t intended to make the side journey, but when we realized how close it was to the Lembert Dome Trail in the Tuolumne Meadows area, we decided to investigate. Compared to some of the other lakes, and with the understanding we only viewed it from one vantage point, it was less remarkable than the previous lakes we visited.

Certainly pretty with the snow coated mountains in the background, it lacked the personality of Mirror Lake or Tenaya Lake. Perhaps the distance from the mountains or other geographic wonders lessened the impact.

Lembert Dome Panorama 1/3 – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 245

A panorama taken on top of Lembert Dome

Panorama from the top of Lembert Dome

The panorama above was composed of several pictures taken from on top of Lembert Dome. So impressive was the view before me that I started looking southwest-ish and began to take a series of pictures panning to the west.

I believe this photograph is a view of the mountains from Lembert Dome looking in the approximate southwestern direction. Tuolumne Meadows spread out before me with a view of the distant mountains and sections of the Tuolumne River peeking out here and there.

The Beauty of Tuolumne Meadows – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 202

Tuolumne Meadows

Tuolumne Meadows viewed from near the Sentinel Dome Trail head

We have described Sentinel Dome and the hike to the top and we have also shown photographs of Cathedral Peak which can be seen in the distance (near the middle) of this photograph. I would like to point out that Tuolumne Meadows is beautiful in its own right. Look at the lush expanse of green grass and trees which leads up to the meandering Tuolumne River.

The photo was taken as we were heading to the car after a long day’s hiking and only moments before, a Yellow-bellied marmot went scrambling across the field. I believe that during the warmer weather the field would have abundant wildflowers.

Dog Lake- Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 201

A view from the shore of Dog Lakee

Dog Lake is near Sentinel Dome

If you are hiking near Sentinel Dome or in and around Tuolumne Meadows, the hike to Dog Lake may be of interest. It is actually a side trail off of the main trail to Sentinel Dome. It is not too far from that junction and may provide an extension to a day of hiking.

When we visited, the water was very cold and the shore was muddy because of the recent snow and rains. In drier weather, it would be easier to explore more of the shore line. We were getting to the end of our hiking day and we just stopped for a few pictures and to assess the lake.

Cathedral Peak Portrait – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 200

athedral Peak from Sentinel Dome

Cathedral Peak from Sentinel Dome

Using a telephoto setting on my Canon PowerShot SX50 HS (Bridge Camera), I was able to take a “portrait” of Cathedral Peak from across Tuolumne Meadows. It doesn’t look quite as dramatic in this picture as the colors are muted because of the amount of atmosphere between the lens and the subject, the color of the light, copious snow cover, etc.

The picture above does provide a different look into the “character” of the peak and the overall topography.

Cathedral Peak – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 199

Cathedral Peak and Tuolumne Meadows from Sentinel Dome

Cathedral Peak and Tuolumne Meadows from Sentinel Dome

Among the numerous and varied mountains in Yosemite National Park, a few have gained prominence because of their special location, shape or challenge to conquerors. Cathedral Peak is one such recognizable pinnacle.

The picture above was taken from the top of Sentinel Dome and shows the stretch across Tuolumne Meadows including the river. Cathedral Peak, like Sentinel Dome, stands as figurative sentries keeping watch over the expanse.

Cathedral Peak is open to mountain climbers and it stands as a challenge to those who enjoy that sport. An interesting picture of one such adventurer can be seen HERE.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 110 (Cathedral Peak from Lembert Dome)

Cathedral Peak, Yosemite

Cathedral Peak photographed from the top of Lembert Dome

While standing atop Lembert Dome and admiring the panorama, one mountain stood out above all because of the somewhat unique formation pictured above. Cathedral Peak is one of the Tuolumne Meadows “All Stars”.

The picture was taken with my Canon PowerShot SX50 HS which has quite a reach and from a long distance away. Cutting through that much atmosphere does affect the image negatively, but the view is still impressive.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 92 (Tuolumne Meadows from atop Lembert Dome)

Tuolumne Meadows from Lembert Dome)A view of Tuolumne Meadows from Lembert Dome)

After quite a long trek and then a climb to the top of Lembert Dome, I had to take my time to gaze at all of the views from on top of that edifice.

So beautiful was the entire panorama, that I took enough photographs to cover the complete 360 degree view. I guess that is the good news. The bad news? Well, you may very well see every shot I took to cover all of that territory.

Not to worry, however, as I don’t think one can ever tire of the magnificence of that landscape. I was far enough from the edge of the dome to be safe, but it was still a thrill to look over the precipice.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 46 (Tuolumne Meadows)

Tuolumne Meadows viewed from the Lembert Dome TrailTuolumne Meadows viewed from the Lembert Dome Trail

After a full day of hiking, we were descending from our trek to Lembert Dome and Dog Lake when we came upon this pretty view of Tuolumne Meadows. Cathedral Peak can be seen just to the right of the photo. As we were nearing the parking area, we thought we saw a beaver go scampering across a snowy patch in the distance, but as we later decided, it must have been a marmot.
