SignEdge: Wash Hands – Common Decency

I don’t know about you, but it is quite a turnoff when visiting a bathroom in a public establishment, watching people use the facilities AND then leaving without washing their hands. Some try to dribble a couple of drops of plain water across their palms, but really that doesn’t count

You can imagine my surprise when I was made aware of this sign found in many California bathrooms. Thank you CA!

Yes, common decency demands you wash your hands! Yes, YOU!

An Out of This World Fruit

While I was shopping a week ago and I happened to walk around the produce section of my local Fry’s supermarket, I noticed the following gold and orange-ish item that was being displayed next to the avocados.

donut or Saturn peach

It looked like a peach, but it was squat like a turbin or one of those small decorative pumpkins. It wasn’t completely round like most peaches. And then I noticed this sign:

donut peach sign

These peaches, as noted below, are also called Saturn peaches so they really are “out of this world!”

I am not against donuts in any shape or form, but I have never heard of a donut peach. Have you? Here is another picture just for the record.

donut or Saturn peach

Upon investigation, I found this information:

Saturn’ peaches have an unusually flat shape, and are named for their resemblance to the rings of Saturn. They’re also called ‘Donut’ or ‘Doughnut’ peaches. In fact, many supermarkets package the flat peaches in long boxes like those used for doughnuts, and market them as a good-for-you snack food.

The Guardian Also had an article about them as well:

Doughnut peaches – the new craze

Who knew?

SignEdge: Angling Speed Limit

It isn’t often that one sees a speed limit sign that doubles down on the number 45. Not only does this sign mean 45 mph, it seems to hanging close to a 45-degree angle of sorts.

Disoriented on the Sandwich Express

We were recently out and about on a hiking trip and on the way we decided to stop to pick up some sandwiches for a meal later in the day. As we were traveling through one of the towns, we visited a supermarket to peruse their sandwich offerings.

This was part of the display of sandwiches which caught my interest.

Do you see why this might be a problem? The person who stocked the cooler with sandwiches put them upside down relative to the customer’s perspective. There were all sorts of head twisting and turning before I finally decided upon the Tuna Salad Croissant which, by the way, was quite good!

Kicked to the Curb: Picky, Picky

Description: I don’t know if you have looked down at the roads and parking lots when you travel, but there are some very interesting items being discarded in these areas. I decided they were worth recording and perhaps discussing a bit. It seems that our current culture is leaving some interesting finds for future anthropologists.

***************

I am going out on a limb here and make an assumption that you know what the item is that appears inside the yellow oval below although it is somewhat broken.

If you haven’t guessed, it is a dental flossing pick.

A bit more than a year ago, my wife pointed out an interesting phenomenon that I hadn’t noticed. She told me that she finds many flossing picks discarded in parking lots or along the roadside.

I am one who flosses with a pick on a more or less regular basis and as hard as I try, I can’t imagine how people “floss on the go.” I usually initiate this routine over my bathroom sink with water running and occasionally lubricating the pick with the water.

Once I was made aware of this unusual occurrence, I began to notice that there were many flossing picks discarded in parking areas.

I am wondering if perhaps I am unaware of alternate uses for these devices. If you can offer some insight, please leave a comment below.

Kicked to the Curb: Razor Blade Runner

Description: I don’t know if you have looked down at the roads and parking lots when you travel, but there are some very unusual items being discarded in these areas. I decided they were worth recording and perhaps discussing a bit.

It seems that our current culture is leaving interesting finds for future anthropologists.

***************

While parking at our local grocery store, I saw a broken razor blade just off to the side of my front tire. It was curious to find this artifact at this location and it raised several questions in my mind.

  • Why was the razor there?
  • What was it used for at this location?
  • Did it fall?
  • Was it discarded on purpose?
  • Why wasn’t it picked up after being dropped and discarded properly?

It is truly a puzzle.

**NOTE ** the white line is the dirver’s side parking lot stripe. The car’s tire was less than six inches to the right of the razor blade.

SignEdge: Prisoner and Blindfold Wines

Blindfold Wine Label

The Prisoner Wine Company has some unique labels for their wines. A marketing student could develop an interesting thesis discussing the popularity of wines based on their labels. Do colorful labels attract more purchasers? Do macabre labels attract buyers? Do the names of the wines grab attention?

Yesterday I spotted a wine called Blindfold. The label appears to be of a man tied to a post being readied for execution. The label may be thought more suitable for a red wine while Blindfold is a white blend.

Blindfold Wine Label

“They thought if he couldn’t see the world, then he wouldn’t make his mark. But a blindfold won’t hold him back. It just heightens his other senses. And whether they like it or not, his resilience will leave a lasting impression.”

From the Tasting Notes:

“ABOUT THE WINE –

In establishing our own spin on a white blend, we seek out interesting Rhône and aromatic varietals that nicely complement a classic Chardonnay base. We partner with growers dedicated to cultivating alternative varietals in their outstanding vineyard sites to create an intriguing wine with bold flavor.”

The Prisoner Wine Company, has a self-named red companion wine called The Prisoner.

“The Prisoner crossed a line. He spoke out of turn. He took a stand. His brazen actions bred consequences. But while his chains may hold his weight, his mind wanders unrestrained. For he remains unapologetically bold.”

From the Tasting Notes:

“ABOUT THE WINE –

The Prisoner was inspired by the “mixed blacks” first made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in Napa Valley. The Prisoner is now the most recognized Napa Valley red blend, leading the resurgence of interesting blends by incorporating Zinfandel with the unlikely”

I have written about other wine labels and companies (see the link below) that I found somewhat unique. Would you be attracted to try the wine by these particular labels? Feel free to leave your thoughts in a comment below.

While traveling through Tasmania, I noticed this sign that I had never seen before. It might be a bit confusing at first, but it simply means that there is a bump in the road.

Street Photography As An Art Form – Jack Simon

Street photography is an interesting art form. Not only does it include one of my favorite hobbies, photography, it often includes a variety of things that can not be anticipated, are unusual and/or hard to believe.

This short video about the street photography of Jack Simon explains it better than any written word can. The photos are generally “strange,” but well-composed and photographically astute. I think you will find the video entertaining in and of itself, but the photographic philosophy and skills are enlightening to those of us interested in this genre.

Eric Kim also created a video interview with Mr. Simon and you can watch below (although there is some crossover of content):
