One of the wonders of Hetch Hetchy when we visited in early June, 2016 was the fields of wildflowers still blooming in large numbers enveloping the Wapama Falls Trail at times. Among them was the Mariposa Lily pictured above. As you can note from the photograph it wasn’t alone on this canvas as other wildflowers were vying for attention all around.

If you look closely, you can see an insect in the bottom-right of the flower. It is yellow and black and the antennae can be seen raising above the insect.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 83 (Hetch Hetchy – Dripping Water & Ferns)

Plants growing from dripping springs at Hetch HetchyThe water seeping from the rocks along the trail gave life to plants in crevices

While hiking the Wapama Falls Trail at Hetch Hetchy, we came across a number of places were the plenitude of recent rains gave rise to dripping streams along the rock faces. Plants found hospitable environments and festooned the hard surfaces with their soft, contrasting foliage. I found the contrast of the green, delicate foliage and wet, dark rocks to be very interesting.

Ferns were growing robustly in this moist and somewhat shady environment.

Photography – Nested Pets (Dogs and Cats)

We have an expression in our house – nested bests. What this means is that you are in the best place with the best people doing the best thing at the best time; nested bests. There aren’t many nested bests moments, but when they happen, they are worth savoring and recalling.

There’s cold and There’s COLD!

It is hard to believe that anyone who has browsed the Internet over the last three days has not seen this picture, shown below courtesy of a screen shot from the website of Michael Davies.

Apparently they tried an experiment of taking a number of thermoses filled with hot tea and tossing them in the air in an area near the Arctic Circle where temperatures are thirty degrees below zero; now that is cold!

This is what happens to the hot tea when it is swirled in an arc at such cold temperatures.

Christmas or Not, Photographs Preserve Memories

Photographs have the power to transport the viewerback to times gone by. All of the shoe boxes, cigar boxes or drawers full of photographs contain a lifetime or many lifetimes of memories. Flipping through a photo album or passing old pictures around enables us to re-live memories we declare personally precious.

Below is a video that reminds us of the ability of photographs (or videos for that matter) to help us recall our past.

Birds of Las Cruces, NM

During our hiking visit to the Las Cruces, NM area, I was able to focus my attention on bird photography as well; forgive the pun.

One bird that was a new sighting for me was a Scaled Quail.

I thought the pattern on the feathers was quite interesting.

Hiking along a canyon wash, I spotted a bird atop a wall.

It had a somewhat familiar look because, as I later found out, it is a relative of the Cactus Wren. It was a Rock Wren.

The smallish bird below sitting on a branch is a Western Wood-Pewee.

As a gust of wind came along I caught a shot of a Peewee from the other side.

We also encountered a… Black-throated Sparrow

and a Chipping Sparrow as we made our way up and down the mountain trails.

At the nearby Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park we spotted additional birds

This Swainson’s Hawk was very high in the sky, but I did the best I could. The unique color pattern of the underside is a sure give away.

Several Barn Swallows were dodging in and out from under one of the roofs and the light was very dim, but this appeared to be a parent with some food for a nestling.

A Northern Mockingbird did not seem to mind as we moved in to get a closer look.

At a rest stop on the way home from Las Cruces this fellow was hopping from trash bin to trash bin looking for some goodies.
