Another view of Half Dome – It never got tiresome.

This picture of Half Dome was taken from Glacier Point. If you plan to go to Yosemite, schedule a ride to Glacier Point which hosts some of the best views of many of the Valley’s hot spots.

Better yet, take the shuttle bus and save your car’s brakes and a nerve burning ride. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Once again, I recommend that, if you are fit and you are comfortable with following a trail and trail map, consider taking one of the shorter trails down to the Valley. We took the Four Mile Trail and it was splendid.

Dramatic Clouds over Hetch Hetchy 

Hetch Hetchy with a dramatic sky

The day we began our hike on the Wapama Falls Trail at Hetch Hetchy the weather was variable. It started as a partly cloudy morning, but by midday, the clouds were dominant.

As we were making our way back to the parking area, I couldn’t get enough of the dramatic valley containing the reservoir. It was reminiscent of the scenes one sees from China with the mountains encircling the water. The clouds added another dimension to the setting.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 73 (Ribbon Fall)

Ribbon Fall Yosemite NPRibbon Fall is seasonal and flows only during the melts of winter and early spring.

Ribbon Fall is more wispy than many of the other waterfalls and it may be overshadowed by its proximity to El Capitan; situated just to the west.

Looking at the way the water starts narrow and widens as it reaches the base, it is easy to understand how it received the moniker, horsetail. I was drawn in by the light playing off the leaves of the trees as the mountain was being bathed in shadow.

Photographers visiting national parks often have one big problem; how to stop taking pictures. It seemed to me that around every bend of the road at Yosemite, there was a picture postcard scene waiting to be captured. Stopping at each impulse would yield a MPG in the minus range … of that I am sure.

There were so many stunning views just a step to the side of nearly every roadway. At many places there were pull outs or parking areas, but for others, there was just a narrow shoulder.

Fortunately, digital cameras make the abundant capture of photographs relatively inexpensive. My advice is always to bring many camera batteries and a good number of memory cards.

The picture above was taken on the side of the route 120. There were a couple of pull outs (one on either side of the road), but I needed to walk to get the picture I wanted. This is not one of the “touted” views, but picturesque just the same. An earlier arrival would have yielded a better color of light, but I think you can sense the beauty that is almost everywhere in our parks.

Bridal Veil Falls was putting on quite a show as the Three Brothers (rock formation) looked on. A typical shot from this vantage point will often include El Capitan which is off to the left.

I wanted the other “players” to have their own moment.

Our day hiking at Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy reservoir was overcast and threatening at times. Wapama Falls (bottom center) was putting on quite a display as seen from the bridge leading to the tunnel and the trail. Less robust, but interesting Tueeulala Falls can be seen diagonally to the left of Wapama Falls.

As stated in prior posts, Half Dome, the icon of Yosemite National Park, peeks out from many vantage points . This was initially a color photo, but because of the lighting and the lack of clouds in the sky, the picture appeared too flat. I believe the black and white rendition presents it more accurately; amazing!

Photography – Grand Teton National Park, Cascade Canyon (B&W)

As most of JBRish readers know, I am an amateur photographer. I have explained my photography philosophy on my blog before, but let it suffice to say that I am an “opportunistic” photographer. I do not wait for a scene to unfold, but I capture those scenes before me that resonate in some way.

As an enthusiastic hobbyist, I am trying to learn to use Adboe’s Lightroom and some associated ad ons. I have only begun this journey so if you find that my submissions via this website are lacking, kindly understand that I am learning along the way.

Below is a picture of some of the mountains we encountered while hiking the Grand Teton National Park’s Cascade Trail. The day was overcast with very little color, but when converted to black and white, I think the picture has a special quality. What do you think? El Capitan and Half Dome as seen from Tunnel View 

A Warm glow was settling over El Capitan and Half Dome as seen from Tunnel View.

We had stopped at Tunnel View prior to this, but the light was more inviting as we cam upon this scene at this time of day and we were compelled to stop once again. El Capitan can be seen in the upper left with Half Dome close to dead-center. It is awesome to see both major icons of Yosemite in this orientation.
