Taft Point – El Capitan – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 225

Rock Formations - Taft Point Trail

A view of El Capitan from Taft Point

Once we arrived at Taft Point, the beautiful views opened up before us in a number of directions. The photo above shows El Capitan and the valley meadows. You might be able to discern the Merced River just off to the left of the meadow nearest El Capitan’s nose.

As you can see, I was standing relatively close to the edge, but leaning over a secured railing. It was quite a drop off and it was reassuring to have the “safety net” of a railing to lean against as I jockeyed for a position that would yield the desired picture.

Another Spire from the Valley Floor – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 205

Valley spire

Another photo of a spire seen from the valley floor

As we were hiking along looking in every direction as well as up and down, scenes like that above appeared over and over again. These natural wonders were so impressive that I found myself with the camera pressed to my nose a good amount of the time. I did take time to look directly at the scenes and soak them in, but there was a compulsion to photograph it all.

As you can see, we were walking between and over logs along the way. This wasn’t a well-groomed path, but a natural hiking trail. I wish I could relay directly the feeling I had while hiking in this valley. It was wild, natural and serene. This was not an “unusual” scene as these panoramas unfolded in front of us on many occasions!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 116 (Yosemite Valley – Sentinel Rock)

Sentinel Rock, YosemiteSentinel Rock stands tall in Yosemite Valley

Interestingly enough, even the supporting cast of mountains, lakes and trails assume staring roles at various times. While hiking Yosemite Valley and at the edge of certain paths, when El Capitan and Half Dome are not directly in view, one tends to focus on other Yosemite features. They are absolutely “ready for their closeups!”

Sentinel Rock is a beauty in its own right, but it is difficult to compete with such extraordinary neighbors. Like Devil’s Tower, this formation could probably stand on its own if it dwelled elsewhere!

We enjoyed encountering Sentinel Rock during our hikes and noting how beautiful it was rising from the meadow with all of the lush green grasses providing the “red carpet” treatment!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 58 (The Spires & El Capitan with Sun Setting)

El Capitan, the Valley Spires and Peaks

A view of El Capitan, the Spires and Peaks as the Valley Opens Before Us

The light was not the best for taking a photograph as we were hiking along the Four Mile Trail in a westerly direction with the sun beginning to set. I felt compelled to try to capture the stunning view of Yosemite Valley with El Capitan on the right and the Spires and Peaks on the left. The Valley was open before us and we could see the Merced River and the meadows. It was beautiful and inspiring. We stopped often to inhale the scene before us.
