Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 89 (Cascade Creek Waterfall)

Waterfalls leading to Cascade Creek

Waterfall leading to Cascade Creek

If you have been following my YOY series of posts, by now I think you have the idea that in spring and early summer and during an average year of rainfall, it would be hard to avoid waterfalls at Yosemite National Park; they are everywhere!

The waterfall pictured above was on the high side of route 120 as it cuts through the mountains surrounding the valley. On the other side of the roadway was Cascade Creek highlighted in YOY 68. While this is not a thunderous waterfall, it is substantial and it beautifully meanders down the rocky mountain slope to form a picturesque site. The attraction, however, pales in comparison to Yosemite’s other falls and may be overlooked.

There are two pullouts nearby and I think it is worthy of a stop!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 83 (Hetch Hetchy – Dripping Water & Ferns)

Plants growing from dripping springs at Hetch HetchyThe water seeping from the rocks along the trail gave life to plants in crevices

While hiking the Wapama Falls Trail at Hetch Hetchy, we came across a number of places were the plenitude of recent rains gave rise to dripping streams along the rock faces. Plants found hospitable environments and festooned the hard surfaces with their soft, contrasting foliage. I found the contrast of the green, delicate foliage and wet, dark rocks to be very interesting.

Ferns were growing robustly in this moist and somewhat shady environment.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 61 (Hetch Hetchy Falls)

Wapama and Tueeulala FallsWapama and Tueeulala Falls at Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

Our day hiking at Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy reservoir was overcast and threatening at times. Wapama Falls (bottom center) was putting on quite a display as seen from the bridge leading to the tunnel and the trail. Less robust, but interesting Tueeulala Falls can be seen diagonally to the left of Wapama Falls.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 34 (Gentle, Smaller Waterfall)

Small, gentle waterfall at YosemiteSmall waterfall with its own understated charm

One of the major attractions at Yosemite during the spring and early summer is the abundance of impressive waterfalls. Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, Bridalveil Falls and Vernal Falls quickly come to mind.

There are numerous other, smaller and quite gentle waterfalls that trickle their way through the woods and sometimes intersect pathways that orchestrate their own magic. They are pretty and interesting in their own right as you can see above. What the picture cannot show is the pretty sound and soothing motion of the water while birds chirp in the background. It is a simple pleasure proffered to those who hike Yosemite.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 24 (Nevada Falls from GP)

Nevada Falls - closeup

A closer view of Nevada Falls as seen from Glacier Point

The Merced river and the waterfalls throughout the park were at near peak during our visit to Yosemite. This picture of Nevada Falls underscores nature’s power and beauty. Our lodge was close to Yosemite Valley Falls and we enjoyed the low, sleep-inducing roar throughout the night.

Vernal and Nevada Falls

“Vernal Falls (lower) and Nevada Falls of Yosemite as seen from Glacier Point”

Below is a closer view of the same picture cropped to show the falls more clearly

Vernal and Nevada Falls

Yosemite has domes, mountains and rock formations of alls shapes and sizes, but to add to its character, it has an abundance of waterfalls. The above view from Glacier point taken near Washburn Point show the lower Vernal Falls and the upper Nevada Falls. They were flowing with vigor during the time we were there!
