Young Barn Owls Learn How to Fly

Cute Barn Owl Learns How To Fly – Super Powered Owls – BBC

Barn owls are very pretty and unusual-looking creatures. This short video shows two young barn owls being raised from chicks by humans and now need to learn how to fly. Luna, the older, is first to experiment with flight. The unique head movements are curious and look at the size and sharpness of the talons!

Save the Ocean, Save Ourselves – TED Talk Video

Ocean photographer Thomas Peschak has long been concerned about the envirionmental impact the world’s population has had on ocean life. At one time he sought to shock audiences into action to protect the ocean and all forms of its life. Today, however, he teaches them to love the ocean life and appreciate the inter-connectedness we have with the ocean and in that way, people will be motivated to work to save the oceans from destruction.

In the video below Peschak takes us into several of his favorite realms and lets us explore why they are so unique and vital. Included in the video are a variety of sharks, manta rays, dolphins, whales and special ocean-related geographical locations. I think you will find this fascinating.

From Toy to Creative Realism – Felix Hernandez

I have highlighted a number of very creative people on my website and I have said it before, but I need to say it yet again. The amount of talent that is “out there” is amazing! It is hard to believe what someone who is focused can accomplish.

Felix Hernandez takes a simple toy car and crafts a very realistic scene using artificial ingredients and Photoshop-type post production techniques. It is truly stunning to watch this come together as a finished project.

Watch the animation below, The Love Car, to appreciate true artistic creativity.

Video – Mother and Child Reunion – Puppies

This momma dog was brought to the Marin Humane Society to be surrendered and put up for adoption. The workers quickly realized that this dog must have recently had a litter and they contacted the original owner and convinced them to bring the babies to the shelter to be reunited with their mother.

The video depicts the happy reunion of mother and pups!

I think the best move would have been to bring them to the shelter together, but nevertheless, they are together now!

Pickleball – Delayed Gratification with the Ground Stroke

One of the first shots most people learn when they begin to play pickleball is the forehand groundstroke. If you ask players about this shot, they would probably say that they know how to do it and that may be true…to some extent for most of us!

We all probably learned the basics about the best way to correctly execute the pickleball groundstroke, but do we all maintain our focus and correctly perform all phases of the stroke?

The video below with Wes Gabrielsen demonstrates the groundstroke from both the right-hand and left-hand side. (Wes is a 5.0 player who switches hands for a groundstroke with either hand). Watch the video below and pay attention to the “hints” which are also detailed at the end of this post.

  • Keep your eye on the ball through the stroke; especially at the point of contact – watch the ball hit the paddle.

**The reason this is important is that the ball may move along an unanticipated path and if you are not watching it, you cannot adjust your swing and you may mishit the ball or perhaps miss it all together. Don’t be tempted to look up to see how well you hit the ball. Delay your gratification and keep your head down, eye on the ball and follow through. I understand this is easier said than done!

  •

  • Bend your knees and get the weight of your body behind the shot.
  •

  • Follow through towards the target. Coach Mo suggests that you “kiss” the shoulder of the paddle hand to assure the follow through.

Quoted from the YouTube Video:

“What if you didn’t have one good forehand, you had TWO! You may not have this unique ability on the court, but we know you will enjoy watching Wes Gabrielsen, a top 5.0 pickleball player, demonstrate this move which he uses to his advantage. We have even included some pop up tips that apply to all forehands whether left or right! And the slow motion is just plain fun to watch besides being helpful when you study other players to improve your own pickleball skills. Watch this one today!”

Video – Moving Pictures from Above and Beyond

Trey Ratcliff, proponent of HDR photography and photographic pioneer has produced yet another beautiful and stunning piece of art. This time, however it is a video.

These moving pictures have a mystic and often ethereal quality to them because of the choice of music juxtaposed with the words of Alan Watts. You can’t help but ponder the meaning of life, death and existence while watching and carefully listening.

I found myself replaying parts of the video so I could better understand the words.

NOTE – Some of the words are hard to understand in places, but the images are superb and inspirational.

Thank you Trey!

Video – Dogs through the Eyes of the Dogist

Do you know who the Dogist is? Well, you aren’t alone. I am apparently, out in the cold on this one and maybe it is because I don’t have a dog (although I do like dogs; a lot!). There are many who do know and enjoy the work of Elias Weiss Friedman aka “The Dogist.” He is doggin’ it and really having a good time!

Pickleball Video – Be a Better Banger

As I watch many of my colleagues play pickleball and a volley develops where the ball goes back and forth several times, it sometimes looks like a pool party where everyone in the pool is just trying to keep the ball from hitting the water. Players are simply patty-caking the ball back and forth. Joe Baker refers to this phenomenon in one of his videos.

If a ball is going back and forth at a moderate pace, that is an ideal time to step forward and “bang” the ball so it is harder to return.

Deb Harrison’s latest video, “Be a Better Banger,” may help you improve your power hitting technique.

Video – Anyone Want to Adopt Pinky the CAT!

Let’s paraphrase Robert Burns and put this under the category of “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men often go astray.”

Nobody likes to see animals in shelters especially if those shelters can not house these former pets or strays indefinitely. We can all identify with people who create videos to help find these pets a new, loving home. There are times, however, when the animals themselves are working at odds to that goal.
