I am a sucker for stonework and Yosemite has more than its share. There are a good number of causeways, curbs and cottages made of stone throughout the park. Using such a natural resource only adds to the beautiful surroundings.

Above is yesterday’s picture with the hint circled. Do you see that red object?
We were very surprised to learn that the park service allows rock climbers to mount El Capitan since it is such an iconic landmark. There were a number of climbers trying to ascend during our visit and onlookers were lined up under trees in nearby fields to watch the climbers make their way to the top.
We were told that the climb can take between three and six days depending on a variety of factors. Climbers must bring everything with them to sustain them during this feat. Plans need to be made for sleeping, eating, etc.
The red item is one of the bags used to carry supplies and below that there appears to be a pail and a weight. Above the bag there are two climbers with additional supplies. This may be hard to discern so I enlarged a portion of the picture which appears below.

We were hiking past El Capitan on this day and we noticed something different. We hadn’t seen this before in our numerous trips by the mountain.
HINT – Look carefully near the middle of the photo. It has been cropped to make it larger even though it isn’t large.
Enter your answer/guess in the comments and “stay tuned” for the answer.
SUPER HINT – I know the picture above is small so if you want even more of a hint, click HERE to look at a larger picture which should make the discovery easier.

One of the major attractions at Yosemite during the spring and early summer is the abundance of impressive waterfalls. Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, Bridalveil Falls and Vernal Falls quickly come to mind.
There are numerous other, smaller and quite gentle waterfalls that trickle their way through the woods and sometimes intersect pathways that orchestrate their own magic. They are pretty and interesting in their own right as you can see above. What the picture cannot show is the pretty sound and soothing motion of the water while birds chirp in the background. It is a simple pleasure proffered to those who hike Yosemite.

It was hard to resist stopping every time we passed the Tunnel View pull off. The panoramas were stunning even if the time of day was not quite right for a photograph. To see El Capitan (mid-left) and Half Dome playing off of each other was very special.
NOTE – This tends to be one of the more crowded areas of the park when it comes to finding parking spaces. Many people want to stop to see this view and so do the tour buses. Plan to be patient and leave enough time.

As we were hiking to and from Taft Point, the path was quite muddy in places because of the snow melt and previous rains. In several places we noticed what looked like discarded dried apricots or something similar. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious this was some type of fungus or mushroom. Sure enough, research indicated that it is Orange Peel or Orange Cup fungus.

For those who want a bit more luxury mixed in with the natural beauty of Yosemite, the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwanhee Hotel) provides an ample dose. Originally designed to appeal to the upper echelons of society, it was built in a grand style with as many amenities as possible. This type of construction has been dubbed “Parkitecture.”

After hiking to the very top of Lembert Dome, the panorama was spectacular. Standing out among the beautiful scene before me, however, was a distant Cathedral Peak with pockets of snow.

Most hikers enjoy a path or trail that has a canopy which offers some relief from the sun on hot days. On an overcast day it can also provide dramatic lighting and atmosphere. As you can see, this path was along the waterline of the reservoir and combined the best of the woodsy ambience along with a view of the lake. It was the perfect complement to the beautiful surroundings.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 29 (Hetch Hetchy Wooden Bridge)
On one of our attempts to hike the Valley Loop Trail, the signs misled us (that’s another story) to Mirror Lake. This was serendipitous as it was a beautiful day to catch the reflection of North Dome in the calm waters. The loop around Mirror Lake is fairly long and a number of times we were stopped to assist others in locating or re-locating the actual trail.
One piece of advice I can offer is to purchase the detailed map of the Yosemite Valley trails. It is worth the $4 US that we paid at the time and would be an excellent resource for those planning to hike the valley trails.
