Latest N. Phoenix Pickleball News – December 4, 2021

Hello N. Phoenix Pickleball Players and Friends:

I wanted to get this email out to the group because of a time-sensitive item about the upcoming tournament at Indian Wells, CA.

First things first…

I have been the N. Phoenix Pickleball ambassador for quite a few years and as most of you know, I remain a strong proponent of pickleball and the USA Pickleball Association.

I am resigning my position of ambassador because of a recent change in the USAPA’s requirements that all ambassadors need to have a background check. I don’t disagree with this requirement, BUT as part of the background check, they required me to provide my social security number to a private company for the “investigation.”

As part of my professional experiences as a life-long educator, I have been finger printed a number of times and had the FBI and other law agencies do background checks to assure that I have no criminal background whatsoever. I offered to have another FBI background check repeated for the USAPA, but that apparently was not adequate.

I do not see a need to provide my social security number to a company to do a background check for a position for which I receive no appreciable benefit other than the title and to which I donate dozens of hours per year. My wife and I had our social security number compromised several years ago via the Experian debacle and we do not want to risk a repeat of that problem.

Please understand that this in no way diminishes my enthusiasm for pickleball and I will continue to do what I can to help everyone enjoy our sport.

I extend a sincere THANK YOU to the USAPA for allowing me to serve as N. Phoenix pickleball ambassador and I wish them continued success.

***** Pickleball Makes it to the Today Show *****

Watch the Today Show anchors try their hand at pickleball. While this is tongue-in-cheek, I think we can appreciate the “trials” and fun times the anchors had with trying pickleball for the first time.
