Lakes of Yosemite 1/4 (Tenaya) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 299

Tenaya

Tenaya Lake pictured from a southeast shore

Everyone knows what a lake is of course. It is a body of water surrounded by land and at Yosemite, the land is very often surrounded by mountains. It is interesting though how different they are.

We were on our way to Tuolumne Meadows to hike Lembert Dome when we were approached Tenaya Lake. We stopped briefly to take several photographs. We wanted to spend more time hiking in and around the lake area, but alas we will have to return to fulfill those wishes.

Tenaya Lake – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 237

Tenaya Lake

A picturesque view of Tenaya Lake

Just a few days prior to taking this photograph, we were driving along the main road into Yosemite National Park and there were ice floes on Tenaya Lake. As you can see, they were soon gone. The sky was clear blue and the near mirror-like reflections were impressive and no ice was to be found.

There were a number of cars parked along the road with roadside picture takers, but just a short walk along the shore, brought us to this spot where we were met by only a few other visitors.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 112 (Tenaya Lake)

Tioga Road is one of the major thoroughfares of Yosemite and it leads to some of the major sights in the Tuolumne Meadow area. Interestingly enough, on the way into the park from the NE, there was quite a bit of ice in the lakes along Tioga Road. By the time we returned a couple of days later, the ice was gone, but patches of snow on the land remained.

Tenaya Lake proved to be a very popular stopping point for hikers, photographers and other nature lovers. On this day, the water was very still and reflections were rather crisp. I had hoped for a dramatic cloud or two, but really…who can complain with a scene like this?

Tenaya Lake

“Just off of State Route 120, Tenaya Lake creates postcard pictures from many Yosemite vantage points.”

Tanaya Lake was named after a Native American Indian chief who was later forced to flee the area. Unlike this episode in history, the lake often appears very serene and peaceful. This is perhaps one of the most scenic of the lakes in Yosemite!
