Yosemite Falls Mountain – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 262

Yosemite Falls

Yosemite Falls and Yosemite Falls Point

Domes are not the only peaks in Yosemite National Park that warrant a hike. Any time there is a waterfall, and there are a number of them at Yosemite, there is a mountain down which the water must fall and/or trickle.

Yosemite Falls is no exception and the mountain down which it flows is a favorite challenge for those seeking a strenuous or moderately strenuous hike with a payoff of stunning views. The main goal for those seeking to test themselves appears to be Yosemite Point (see bottom photo).

Another feature I wasn’t aware of was the Lost Arrow Spire (see photo below). I only found out about this formation once I returned home and began to organize my photographs.

El Capitan A Massive Form – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 261

El Capitan from the meadow

El Capitan’s massive presence

Yesterday’s post demonstrated how perspective can ‘fool’ the eye and that very close up El Capitan doesn’t look much different than other large rocky mountains, but step back a bit and it will reveal it’s massive form when juxtaposed against its natural surroundings.

The green of the valley proves to be a good foil and border for the large form festooned with highlights in browns, grays and blacks.

El Capitan From the Meadow – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 260

El Capitan from the meadow

El Capitan as seen from the meadow

Yesterday’s post showed a picture of El Capitan as we were hiking from Glacier Point down to the valley via the Four Mile Trail. I pointed to the meadow area in the bottom right of that photo. The picture above was taken from that meadow as we approached El Capitan.

It loses some of its grandeur (IMHO) as one gets closer. The size and scope of it from a distance lends an aura of greatness.

El Capitan in Black and White – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 259

El Capitan in Black and White

El Capitan in black and white

We were hiking the Four Mile Trail in the mid-to-late afternoon with El Capitan off to the west. The position of the sun made it difficult to take photographs with much color and detail. The fact that there were no clouds this day also createded harsher lighting.

One thing I do like about this photograph, however, is the way the textures show in the duotone version. This mountain is craggy beyond description which is probably one of the reasons climbers like to ascend along one of the routes.

We hiked in the meadow area seen in the bottom right and also in and along the trees to the left on one or more of our forays. You might be able to make out one of the bends of the Merced River just west (left) of the meadow).

El Capitan – Western View – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 258

El Capitan

El Capitan from a western view

Not to be outdone by all of the dome talk, El Capitan exerts its presence over Yosemite Valley. Anchoring the west end while Half Dome dominates the more easterly location, it draws rock climbers and hikers alike.

Personal Dome – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 257

A different kind of dome

Jeff shows off his personal dome

Speaking of all the domes at Yosemite, i.e. Half Dome, North Dome,Lembert Dome, etc., I thought I would pose and expose my personal dome at Glacier Point with Half Dome in the background.

My cameras and belly pack share the spotlight!

North Dome Difference – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 256

North Dome Wide View

North Dome from a wider view

Yesterday’s post explained the “battle of the domes” and expressed the idea that North Dome is somewhat of an orphan when it comes to name recognition. Half Dome and Lembert Dome seem to get more recognition and press (IMHO).

North Dome is an interesting structure with a variety of nooks and crannies visible. The photograph above provides a wider view of this peak as seen from the Mirror Lake area. Given another chance, I think I would hike to the top of North Dome. I have a feeling there is an awesome view of Half Dome from that perch.

North Dome Difference – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 255

North Dome Difference

North Dome

Another dome visible from the Mirror Lake Trail in addition to Half Dome, is North Dome. Prior to my visit to Yosemite, I didn’t know about North Dome. I am not sure how many domes are named at Yosemite, but Half Dome obviously has “competitors.”

If you look at the picture of Lembert Dome and the photograph of Half Dome, you will notice that they have a very flat side. As far as I can tell, North Dome does not. What is prominent is the rounded protrusion seen in the photograph above; a rather bulbous feature.

Half Dome Psyche – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 254

Half Dome meadow view

Half Dome as viewed from the meadow near Yosmeite Village

Let’s be honest…Half Dome is far from the tallest mountain. It probably would not win a beauty contest by any measure of mountain attractiveness. It may not even be the most fun to climb. With all of the factors noted, however, it is probably one of the most lauded and photographed physical features in the world.

Half Dome has become part of America’s psyche. It has been placed in the photographic lexicon by Ansel Adams and in the hearts of many Americans by Ken Burns.

When Yosemite visitors are asked what they most want to see, the answer undoubtedly would be Half Dome. The roadsides along the best fields of view are crowded with cars stopped nearby and people with cameras pointing them skyward towards the Yosemite icon.

Half Dome is part of American lore and perhaps even that of the world.

A Dome of Another View – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 253

Half Dome viewed from the Mirror Lake Trail

Half Dome viewed from a vantage point near the Mirror Lake Trail

This photograph of Half Dome shows just the tip of the noted peak. We met a ranger guiding a group around Mirror Lake and we asked about certain sights in the area and he recommended an ascent to a vantage point where we could see a view of Half Dome that not many others get to witness.

I was intrigued by this suggestion so I began the upward trek, but it was going to take more time than I had planned for so I just snapped this one shot and returned. I do have a minor regret that I didn’t go to the top of the trail to get a fuller view of Half Dome, but as they say, that is water under the bridge now.
