Lakes of Yosemite 2/4 (Mirror) – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 300

Mirror Lake

North Dome reflected in Mirror Lake

Another one of the popular Yosemite lakes is Mirror Lake. One look at the picture above leads one to realize where it got that name. North Dome is reflected in the lake and provides an excellent subject for those who enjoy scenic photography.

Mirror Lake is located diagonally acaross and roughly half way between Half Dome and North Dome. It is a nice hike around the lake and if visitors hike upward, they can have amazing views of both North Dome and Half Dome

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 84 (Mirror Lake – Between the Domes)

Mirror LakeMirror Lake nestled between the mountains of Yosemtie

Mirror Lake is a pretty lake although it is a bit cluttered with vegetation at times. This was one of the first major hikes we took and I did not realize that Half Dome was situated to the southeast. I “heard” that it is possible to get a reflection of Half Dome in the lake, but I did not know and therefore did not seek out that shot. It would have been a good one to attempt.

I did manage to capture several images of North Dome which lies northwest of Mirror Lake. It would be a star in almost any other surrounding, but at Yosemite, it is forced to assume a supporting role.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 60 (North Dome)

North Dome from Mirror Lake TrailA view of North Dome from the Mirror Lake Trail

Yosemite has many domes and some of them get much attention. People who have never visited Yosemite seem to know Half Dome and many who have visited are familiar with Sentinel Dome and/or Lembert’s Dome, but it seems that there is a Rodney Dangerfield of domes; North Dome.

North Dome rises above the tree tops and is visible from many angles along the Mirror Lake Trail. Unfortunately, across the way (diagonally southeast and more than 1,000 feet taller), is Half Dome. North Dome can’t seem to get much respect!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 27 (Mirror Lake Reflection)

Mirror Lake Reflecting North Dome

North Dome reflected clearly in Mirror Lake.

On one of our attempts to hike the Valley Loop Trail, the signs misled us (that’s another story) to Mirror Lake. This was serendipitous as it was a beautiful day to catch the reflection of North Dome in the calm waters. The loop around Mirror Lake is fairly long and a number of times we were stopped to assist others in locating or re-locating the actual trail.

One piece of advice I can offer is to purchase the detailed map of the Yosemite Valley trails. It is worth the $4 US that we paid at the time and would be an excellent resource for those planning to hike the valley trails.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 11

Hang Glider over Cliff

“As we were approaching Mirror Lake, we saw this hang glider.”

It was interesting to note how relatively “open” Yosemite is to a variety of sports such as hang gliding. I didn’t expect to see anything like this in such an iconic location.
