Merced River meanders

The Merced River in the Vicinity of El Capitan

As you might have gathered from my previous posts about Yosemite, the Merced River meanders throughout the valley and this too will cross your path a number of times if you do much hiking in and around the Valley.

We were delighted that the river was flowing well and there were both rapids and more placid expanses to reveal the full character of the Merced.

Drama Along the River – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 273

Boulders with rushing water

Swirling rushing waters

The Merced River provided an exciting background for our hike along the Vernal Fall trail. The sound of rushing water paired with the gray overcast sky created some drama.

As we walked along and near the river, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the water’s sound and the beautiful earth-toned hues of the rocks, water and eddies.

Merced River Onward Always Onward* – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 272

Merced River rushing water

The rushing waters of the Merced River near the bridge

When water runs down a mountain range into a valley to a collection point, i.e. river, it is relentless and because of the recent rains and snow melt, the Merced was a raging torrent in many locations. The photo above is one example of the powerful rushing waters.

There were times around the Sentinel Beach picnic area, near the Four Mile Trail terminus, where it was calm enough for bathing, boating, etc., but other areas were strictly off limits.

Vernal Fall View from the Bridge – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 271

ernal Fall water spill

The view from the Vernal Fall Tail Bridge

Yesterday’s post showed a crowd gathered above the torrent of water safely poised on the bridge over the Merced River. The scene above is what some of the bystanders were viewing.

This apparently is a popular hike and if you don’t want to hike up the the waterfall itself, this is a picturesque stop and photo opportunity. The day was gray and threatening so we turned around at this point to do hiking closer to refuge should it be needed.

Bridge over the Merced – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 270

Bridge over the Merced

Bridge over the Merced

As we hiked along the trail leading to Vernal Fall, we came across a bridge which spans the Merced River. As you can see, quite a crowd gathered there to look at the flowing river and waterfall spill. The next post will give you a view of what some of the bystanders were viewing.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 176 (Merced River Early Morning)

Merced River Morning

Morning sun shining through on the Merced River

This is one of my favorite pictures of the Merced River. If you are hiking anywhere in Yosemite Valley, there is little chance you can escape crossing the Merced River at one point or another. My bet is that you will find it a constant companion as you hike the various valley trails as it meanders through most of the scenic areas of Yosemite Valley.

This photograph wasn’t too far from El Capitan and the light was a very pretty color. The reflections, the various hues of green and the water’s calm add to the beauty of the river.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 166 (Textures and Colors and Sounds, Oh My!)

Mossy Rocks in the Merced at Happy Isles

A large boulder with moss sits in the Merced River

While walking along the path at Happy Isles, we spied this rock with beautiful textures and colors. It may a bit unusual to be visiting a noted national park with all of its monuments and major attractions and to focus on a moss covered rock.

I was struck by several things. Look at the colors of the moss on that rock. The shades range from medium brown, to gold to light green. Whatever light came through the clouds was highlighting the yellowish growth. Additionally, the warm tones of the fallen log in the background and the sound of the rushing water made this a true sensory experience.

Several posts ago, I spoke about the “small miracles and gems” and perhaps I am the only one who would consider this as such, but that is what makes nature what it is. It is a person-specific connection and wonderment!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 138 (Merced River – Calm After the Storm)

A Calm area of the Merced River

This is one area of the Merced River that was calm after all the rains and ice melt

The Valley Loop Trail skirts the Swinging Bridge Picnic Area where the picture above was snapped. There had been people floating by on inner tubes and rafts while others took the opportunity to go kayaking.

In the distance two people have left their boat and are walking along the far edge of the sandbar. Picnickers and hikers alike were enjoying this calm section of the Merced River of Yosemite National Park.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 114 (Half Dome – Bridge Over the Merced)

Half Dome and Merced River

As we drove back to Yosemite Valley, we passed a bridge over the Merced River and Half Dome held court!

After a day of hiking, we turned down a bend in the road and crossed a bridge over the Merced River where Half Dome could be seen in the distance. I pulled over as quickly as I could, reached for my camera in the back seat and headed to the bridge for a few captures.

There were a number of people floating down the Merced this day. Some had kayaks while others had inflatable rafts or inner tubes. This photograph brings a smile every time I see it!

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 76 (Merced River Flowing)

Merced River Full FLowDuring our Yosemite Visit, the Merced River was at full flow

The week before we arrived at Yosemite, it had rained nearly every day. Added to the snowpack, this pushed all water features into overdrive and it was superb!

This picture of the Merced River is just one indication of the fullness of the flow.
