Location, Location, Location – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 289

Vernal and Nevada Falls viewed from Glacier Point

Where things are located – Yosemite Valley

What is interesting about hiking among the mountains of any national park is the difference in orientation and perspective between ground level and the top of the peaks.

Above is a view of part of Yosemite Valley. Off to the right, almost in the bottom of the frame, is the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (A), Yosemite Falls (B) is easy to see and pick out near the top middle of the shot. The green area (C) is the meadow where I took several very good photographs of Half Dome during the early evening hours (a long lens will help).

Just below the falls and a bit to the right are the stores and some amenities (D).

In the approximate vicinity of the arrow is where we stayed and where the Yosemite Valley Lodge and amenities are located.

We walked it all and enjoyed every minute of it. The Valley Loop trail will take you to most of the places named above and I recommend it, but do purchase a good map as we found the signage somewhat confusing

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 146 (Rustic Touches – Majestic Yosemite Hotel)

The former Ahwahnee, now the Majestic Yosemite Hotel, has Rustic Touches

There were many “rustic touches” in and around the Majestic Yosemite Hotel, formerly the Ahwahnee

If you visit Yosemite, even if you do not stay at the Majestic Yosemite Hotel, it is a stop you should plan to make. There are so many beautiful areas you can visit. We had planned to have a glass of wine in the lounge/bar area, but it was under renovation during the time we visited. The rear meadow with woods and the river provide a delightful area for a stroll and to take some photographs

The picture above is my attempt to capture the rustic nature of the building. The lights, wood and stones look so very old. If you look closely, you can see some hardware to the left of the lamp housing. If the building was constructed today, I believe these mechanisms would be internal.

Processing the Photograph – To add to the rustic look, I used Lightroom to apply significant contrast and some detail enhancement to bring out the lines and colors.

This (above) is the original photograph prior to applying the filters in Lightroom

Which of the two pictures do you like better?

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 117 (The Majestic Yosemite Hotel from Above)

Majestic Yosemite Hotel from aboveThe Majestic Yosemite Hotel as seen from near Glacier Point

It is difficult to appreciate the size and scope of The Majestic Yosemite Hotel and the grounds when you are actually at the former Ahwahnee. The picture shows this structure in the center part of the photo just to the right of the dead tree in the area between the pines. When standing on the grounds, the abundant number of trees tend to partially block the view so seeing the resort from a distance provides more perspective.

For those who want a bit more luxury mixed in with the natural beauty of Yosemite, the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwanhee Hotel) provides an ample dose. Originally designed to appeal to the upper echelons of society, it was built in a grand style with as many amenities as possible. This type of construction has been dubbed “Parkitecture.”

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 22 (Stone Structure)

NOTE – Hello Readers of JBRish! Those who are following my Year of Yosemite posts might recall that on July 7th I posted a different view of the structure below. You can see it HERE.

At that time I asked readers to take a guess regarding the nature of this structure near the the Majestic Yosemite Hotel. Well…do you want to take a guess? If you do take a guess, you can find out if you are correct by highlighting the space between the two lines of asterisks that follow. The answer will be revealed once highlighted.

A stone carriage house!

Second view of stone structure

Another view of the stone structure referenced above

As I noted in the prior post, stone was plentiful in Yosemite and was used as a building material for buildings, bridges, curbs, etc. This stone structure that is situated in proximity to the the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee) served as a carriage house or carriage stop years ago. In older pictures, a sign for the Ahwahnee Hotel can be seen hanging above it.

According to this story on the Internet, the sign was stolen just days before the Ahwahnee was to change its name.

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 15

stone structure

Stone structures provide an “earthy” feel to Yosemite

Yosemite has many stone structures because stone was abundant at the time the park was being developed. The design of the stone structure above stood out as unique. Do you want to venture a guess regarding its purpose? I will give you a hint…it was near the Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee). [ The answer will be given in a later post ]

Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 4

Yosemite's Majestic Yosemite Hotel

“The Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee) with surrounding mountains is highly rated by AAA”

The Majestic Hotel is one of the iconic landmarks within the boundaries of Yosemite. It certainly is beautiful in its rustic way and is considered first class for the park. The grounds are very picturesque and as you can see, the surrounding area is noteworthy.
