The Three Brothers – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 298

Three Brothers and Bridalveil Falls from Tunnel View

Three Brothers from Tunnel View

It has been reported that John Muir thought The Three Brothers provided one of the most spectacular views of Yosemite Valley. The photograph above was taken from Tunnel View where the entire valley opens before onlookers.

The highest or uppermost brother is Eagle Peak. Then there is the Middle Brother and the Lower Brother. Bridalveil Falls was flowing well this spring.

Half Dome from the Meadow 3/3 – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 297

Half Dome from the Meadow

Half Dome as seen from the nearby meadow.

This is the last of this series of photographs of Half Dome taken from the meadow near the Yosemite Valley Lodge during the approaching evening hours.

Being presented with such a spectacular and iconic view with golden light, I didn’t want to miss a good shot. Add to this the fact that I was essentially using my camera for the first time, I had to make sure I took enough photos of this view. Some of the readers may think perhaps too many!

Half Dome from the Meadow 2/3 – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 296

Half Dome from the Meadow

Half Dome as seen from the nearby meadow.

Today’s photograph of Yosemite is another capture of Half Dome from an open meadow in the vicinity of Yosemite Lodge. We move a bit closer with this picture when compared to that of yesterday. As you can see, the evening light was taking on a golden glow.

Half Dome from the Meadow 1/3 – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 295

Half Dome from the Meadow

Half Dome as seen from the nearby meadow.

It seemed as though Half Dome was following us wherever we hiked in and around Yosemite Valley. As reported in a number of posts in this series, it had rained a number of days prior to our arrival and there was a decent amount of snow melt. Because of those two factors, puddles remained in the meadow near our lodging and I was able to take several photographs of Half Dome with puddle reflections.

Merced River – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 294

** NOTE **
JBRish.com will be on a brief hiatus. Additional quotes, quips, posts, etc. will resume shortly.

Merced River meanders

The Merced River in the Vicinity of El Capitan

As you might have gathered from my previous posts about Yosemite, the Merced River meanders throughout the valley and this too will cross your path a number of times if you do much hiking in and around the Valley.

We were delighted that the river was flowing well and there were both rapids and more placid expanses to reveal the full character of the Merced.

To end this series of different views of El Capitan, many of which are similar to previous photographs, in the picture above, I am providing a view of El Capitan’s eastern exposure taken from the nearby meadow.

El Capitan Midline – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 292

Midline view of El Capitan

Midline view of El Capitan

The previous two photographs show El Capitan with the sun coming strongly from the west and blocking details and a photograph taken during the early evening hours from the west.

The photograph above presents El Capitan from a midline perspective somewhere between the east and west side. The “nose” ridge is almost straight ahead. I was standing in the nearby meadow when this photo was snapped.

In this view you can note the color variations, ridges and other geographic formations.

View of El Capitan from the West – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 291

El Capitan as seen from the west

El Capitan as seen from the west

El Capitan is one of the major sights Yosemite has to offer and it’s figurative shadow is broadly cast across the Yosemite Valley. It is seen from numerous venues and areas making it hard to ignore.

The photograph above is taken from the west of the giant granite mountain and the ridge seen between the break in the trees off to the right is referred to as El Capitan’s nose.

Hiking Sticks at the Apache Wash Trail – Phoenix

In January, 2015 my brother-in-law was with us and we decided to go for a short hike. The recently opened Sonoran Desert Drive seemed a likely place to visit as we had passed the Apache Wash trailhead that looked inviting.

We enjoyed a short hike up part of the mountain trail and I was able to capture a couple of pictures of a Red-tailed Hawk, nothing great, but enough for an ID.

After we had finished our short hike (we did not do the entire trail), we headed back to the trailhead where I snapped the picture below of two hiking sticks. They must be hiking sticks if they are wearing hiking shoes; right?

Hiking Sticks - Humor

Anyway, I thought this was a funny picture and I wonder whether the footwear was ever reclaimed by its rightful owner.

El Capitan Photographed Looking Into the Sun – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 290

El Capitan from the Four Mile Trail

El Capitan from the Four Mile Trail

After leaving Glacier Point, we decided to hike the Four Mile Trail down to the Valley. It was already mid-afternoon and the sun would be intense as we were hiking westward.

Taking pictures into the sun was tricky. The photograph above was taken with my “least advanced” and presumably “less capable” camera. The Canon AS 590 IS which is ancient in relationship to current point-and-shoot standards.

While the picture is good for a record of the trip, much of the detail is gone and or washed out. To salvage the picture and make it a bit more artistic in nature, I converted it to black and white.

Which version do you like better; the black and white or the color version? Leave your remarks in the comment section.
