Lupine wildflower growing through a fern

I am fond of lupines because they grow well in our Sonoran Desert environment at spring time and if there is a reasonable amount of winter rains, they can be quite spectacular.

We saw a number of patches of lupines along the trails as we hiked at Yosemite. They are more purple than blue, but the yellow highlights and gray-silver leaves (not pictured above) give them added interest and appeal.

This particular specimen was growing through a fern so the leaves are not visible in this photograph.

I was very impressed to come across such large ferns as we hiked the Wapama Falls Trail at Hetch Hetchy. I am nearly six feet tall so we could surmise that the ferns were more than four feet high. They were lush and full. The wet spring and probably accounts for some of the height.

BTW, this is my usual get-up for hiking and photography. My two cameras basically at the ready with my JPEG-only camera tucked into one of the side pockets of the belly pack. Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 127 (Small Miracles Along the Pathways)

A fern and Alumroot,Heuchera micrantha growing along the Four Mile Trail.

I find that it is so easy to be awed by the major attractions in our national parks such as Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, etc. that the small natural miracles that appear in significant numbers often get overlooked.

I am always surprise at how plants grab hold and take root in the smallest cracks in the rocks to grow and flourish against what appears to be great odds. We encountered numbers of wildflowers along the Four Mile Trail. Some were yellow, others were purple and yet others were just dainty-leaved beauties.

The fern in the photo above surrounds the Alumroot and it makes it difficult to see the full beauty of that particular species (pinkish, small blooms – upper-right). I had an earlier post, Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 28 (Alumroot-Heuchera micrantha), that you can visit to get a better look.

I hope every time you hike, you make the effort to seek out these hidden gems along the side of the trails or tucked away among the nooks and crannies in the rocks.

While hiking the Wapama Falls Trail at Hetch Hetchy, we came across a number of places were the plenitude of recent rains gave rise to dripping streams along the rock faces. Plants found hospitable environments and festooned the hard surfaces with their soft, contrasting foliage. I found the contrast of the green, delicate foliage and wet, dark rocks to be very interesting.

Ferns were growing robustly in this moist and somewhat shady environment.

“Hiking along the trails and roads of Yosemite in June, we found an array of wildflowers and colorful plants.”

As we walked along the trails, wildflowers arose before us in abundance. Here is a lupine nestled among the shade of the trees and leaves of a fern.
