Killdeer Eggs in Our Yard; Oh My!

Several days ago, I reported about the Killdeer that have taken up residence near our house in North Phoenix, AZ. We saw them for days as we worked outside early in the morning tending our plants and preparing for the warmer, or more appropriately, hotter weather. You can see that initial post HERE.

Well, now we know why they were hanging around. They found a spot on the side of our landscape that they felt was just right for their “nest” although it is far from comfortable or nest-like from my obviously non-avian point of view. It is actually a depression they created by moving some of the landscape stones to the side. The mother must also bear the brunt of the intense sun for the entire day. Our attempt to set up a shade barrier frightened her and had to be removed for fear of having the nest abandoned.

It is amazing to see how well both the mom and the eggs blend with the surroundings. Each morning we must strain our eyes to find her once again!

Hetch Hetchy Daisy with Grass – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 280

A closer look at a daisy-like plant

Near the field of flowers we showed in yesterday’s post, there were a number of daisy-like gold or yellow colored plants discovered in more discrete patches alongside the Wapama Falls Trail.

This is a closer look at one of those wildflowers intertwined with a wild grass of sorts. The two plants created an intersection of varied forms and colors that, when viewed in an isolated section, proved quite pretty.

Hetch Hetchy’s fields of wildflowers

As we hiked along the Wapama Falls trail at Hetch Hetchy we would take time to stop and gaze at the wildflowers. This field was so full of color that it was hard to focus beyond the purple and yellow colors. The purple flowers are Owl Clover and my guess is that the yellow-gold blooms are a daisy variety.

As you will see in following posts, there were also more defined pockets of individual specimens of nature’s bounty.

The panoramic view we came across on our way to the Wapama Falls was stunning in it’s beauty and subdued tones. Every few steps called on me to stop and gaze about as the vista opened wider and wider. My hiking spirit didn’t have enough sponge to soak it all in, but I did the best I could.

As I stated in the previous posts it was other worldly and reminiscent of scenes I had seen of exotic lands.

To underscore the Diane Arbus quote, I posted the picture above that was taken during our trip to Yosemite National Park. We were on our way back from a day of hikiing and photography at Hetch Hetchy under cloudy skies and some rain. We had hiked for much of the day and we were tired. The scene was of a rustic cabin behind a barbed wire fence just on the meadow side of a wooded area. It was very quaint and “pioneer looking.”

Obviously this was not what I had intended and the photograph was so underexposed, I could not resurrect it in the form I hoped to have it. No excuses, but this camera was a new camera and I had only used it once before. You can read about it as part of my article: My Photographic Conundrum. Part 4 talks about the Nikon D3300 which is the camera used for the photograph above.

I just happen to be one of those people who doesn’t like to give up easily so I decided to see if I could resurrect it in some form or fashion and low and behold, the image below; not great, but salvageable.

NOTE – I am going to write a post about how I transformed this photo from wrecked to resurrected using Adobe Lightroom and Google Nik Collection.
