How much money is a year of your life worth? How about 39 years?

“Ricky Jackson spent 39 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit, the longest anyone who has been exonerated has served in the United States.”

Mr. Jackson and 14 other people detailed in this article spent a total of 350 years in prison before they were exonerated. The National Registry of Exonerations lists 1,541 people who have been exonerated in the USA since 1989. Some of these stories, including that of Ricky Jackson, are heartbreaking.

It makes one wonder how many have died behind bars without getting the chance to be freed or to clear their names. We will never know!

The Majesty of Trees

As readers of JBRish know, my wife and I enjoy hiking and one of the things we appreciate is the beauty of trees. Trees have always fascinated me. To think that there are trees alive today that have been on earth during some of the most historic periods such as the American Revolution, The Renaissance, etc. is awe inspiriing.

Beth Moon has created a wonderful book detailing a good number of these stoic trees in her book, Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time.

(Above)“Avenue of the Baobabs. Elegant in shape and form, these strange and magnificent baobabs seem to rise effortlessly to heights of 98 feet, found only on the island of Madagascar. Beth Moon

More modest appreciation, however, comes from the beauty and majesty we have witnessed on our walks and hikes. We often wonder how a few of the trees we saw managed to survive in some of the most unusual ways and perhaps in less than ideal conditions.

Even in death, trees have a majesty about them. The picture below was taken at Monument Valley, UT.

While hiking Point Reyes National Seashore, CA last summer, we came across this Bay Tree with a cluster of branches and roots at the base. I was interested in the unusual girth.

Another tree we found of special interest this past year was at the Grand Teton National Park. Trees will often gain a foothold and because of their “ill-chosen” location, the earth around their roots is washed away. These are sometimes called “walking trees” because it does appear as though the trees have legs.

This tree, as you can see, lost its foothold and will probably not survive too much longer although it is hanging in there.

Bart is back – Life after death!

Bart the cat after being hit by a car!

Apparently there is life after death. Bart the cat was thought to be dead after being hit by a car and summarily buried. Five days later, Bart had apparently clawed his way out of the grave and showed up at a neighbors house looking for food.

Bart is going to lose an eye, but being just a bit worse for the experience, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Keep On Truckin

Photographer Sergi Karplyuk captured this photo of Kaleb Whitby, age 27, who was driving a Chevrolet Silverado (see picture below of how it should look) when the pickup truck he was driving was sandwiched between two semi-trucks near Baker City, Oregon (bottom photo). Miraculously Whitby suffered only minor injuries needing just a couple of bandages and some ice.

Cat Crazy

Kitty Carlisle’s Favorite Activity

At one time we shared our life with a cat. She was a wonderful pet and there were moments that she was cute beyond belief and other times when she was very exasperating for nothing more than acting like the cat she was. I have never seen an animal sleep more or be more afraid of the smallest object. Bags and boxes were two of her most favorite toys. For those who love their cats like we loved her, I offer the video below:

A Train Called Life*

“Train

At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.

As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant I.e. Our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don’t realize that they vacated their seats!

This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells.

Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers…requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way – love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty — we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.
