North Dome Difference – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 256

North Dome Wide View

North Dome from a wider view

Yesterday’s post explained the “battle of the domes” and expressed the idea that North Dome is somewhat of an orphan when it comes to name recognition. Half Dome and Lembert Dome seem to get more recognition and press (IMHO).

North Dome is an interesting structure with a variety of nooks and crannies visible. The photograph above provides a wider view of this peak as seen from the Mirror Lake area. Given another chance, I think I would hike to the top of North Dome. I have a feeling there is an awesome view of Half Dome from that perch.

North Dome Difference – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 255

North Dome Difference

North Dome

Another dome visible from the Mirror Lake Trail in addition to Half Dome, is North Dome. Prior to my visit to Yosemite, I didn’t know about North Dome. I am not sure how many domes are named at Yosemite, but Half Dome obviously has “competitors.”

If you look at the picture of Lembert Dome and the photograph of Half Dome, you will notice that they have a very flat side. As far as I can tell, North Dome does not. What is prominent is the rounded protrusion seen in the photograph above; a rather bulbous feature.

Family with Cat -A- Tude

As JBRish readers know, I am fond of collecting and sharing vanity license plates from the state of Arizona; my home state. While out-and-about one day, I came across the picture below.

It wasn’t the license plate that caught my eye, but the number of pets this family ostensibly has. This family has quite a menagerie which might not be that unusual. I was somewhat puzzled, however, in deciding how many cats they have. Do they have just one cat with many moods? Do they have two cats which each have various moods? Or, oh my gosh, could they have six cats?!

If it is the latter, I want to know their budget and logistics for buying kitty litter!

Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

Half Dome Psyche – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 254

Half Dome meadow view

Half Dome as viewed from the meadow near Yosmeite Village

Let’s be honest…Half Dome is far from the tallest mountain. It probably would not win a beauty contest by any measure of mountain attractiveness. It may not even be the most fun to climb. With all of the factors noted, however, it is probably one of the most lauded and photographed physical features in the world.

Half Dome has become part of America’s psyche. It has been placed in the photographic lexicon by Ansel Adams and in the hearts of many Americans by Ken Burns.

When Yosemite visitors are asked what they most want to see, the answer undoubtedly would be Half Dome. The roadsides along the best fields of view are crowded with cars stopped nearby and people with cameras pointing them skyward towards the Yosemite icon.

Half Dome is part of American lore and perhaps even that of the world.

A Dome of Another View – Year of Yosemite (YOY) – Day 253

Half Dome viewed from the Mirror Lake Trail

Half Dome viewed from a vantage point near the Mirror Lake Trail

This photograph of Half Dome shows just the tip of the noted peak. We met a ranger guiding a group around Mirror Lake and we asked about certain sights in the area and he recommended an ascent to a vantage point where we could see a view of Half Dome that not many others get to witness.

I was intrigued by this suggestion so I began the upward trek, but it was going to take more time than I had planned for so I just snapped this one shot and returned. I do have a minor regret that I didn’t go to the top of the trail to get a fuller view of Half Dome, but as they say, that is water under the bridge now.
